Ticketing red light runners is standard practice in many big cities, but Chicago is considering doing one better and scanning every car going by for up to date insurance.
It wouldn't matter if you ran the light or were driving conscientiously. The proposed system would exploit both existing stoplight cameras and general security cameras to scan your plate and hand it over to the InsureNet database. If InsureNet discovered that you were lacking insurance, you'd receive a $300-$500 ticket in the mail.
The system is anticipated to raise yearly earnings "well in excess" of $100 million (possibly even double that figure or more), with InsureNet taking a modest 30% for their services. Of course, all of this cash would be contingent on uninsured drivers actually paying their fines. [Chicago Sun-Times via ars technica and Getty]

Oh I agree and I am always glad for that! But still for a guy that was intoxicated, no insurance and "ran from the law" he got off with a stupid ticket or two and I paid to have the car fixed... No DUI so apparently he had not been drinking enough!

I don't feel bad when people get no insurance tickets, because this guy didn't feel bad about not paying for my damages.

I agree 100%. My parents got hit by some hick out of TN back in the 90s with no insurance. The hick got a ticket and my parents were stuck without having a car for two weeks and having to pay their deductibles because of the douche.

just have a 0$ deductible for under insured and un-insured. The way i see it car insurance is a scam. I don't see why their should be a law forcing everyone to have insurance.

Why should I pay for those without insurance? Why have no deductible, you pay more per year... Your logic doesn't make sense... Pay the scamming insurance companies more?

I like the law, and it should be obeyed. Seeing as how I have been screwed twice by uninsured people but yet haven't caused an accident in my life... (Thankfully all my other altercations have been with people with insurance :s00ls:)

Well at least they finally figured out to print the plate # on the stickers so ppl would stop stealing those... $100 plate renewals sounds good to me. Wonder what customized and vanity $'s will go to...

Good point! It did take them all too long to do that!
