🔧 BUILD Pratt's 997.1 911 Turbo

General Information

I have been kicking around the idea of buying a 911 Turbo for years now. I love the 930, 964, and 993 are all out of my price range. Air cooled Porsche are pulling insane money right now. But the 996 (2001-2005) and 997.1 (2007-2008) were in my price range. Not like anything is wrong with them by any means. They started out with 415hp in 2001 up to 480hp in 2007. Plus they have AWD. And let's not forget the incredible torque they make.

After looking for a while I decided to hunt down a 997.1 for a few reasons. It still looks modern (especially the interior), it has an upgraded AWD system over the 996, has variable geometry turbos that spool quickly and make great torque just about anywhere, and it has round headlight. haha But a big reason to get a 2007-early 2009 was the 2010 cars had a different motor and were mostly dual clutch cars. The pre 2010 car used the famously reliable Mezger engine.

The car doesn't have a lot of options. But it has the two main ones I wanted. Locking diff and Sports Chrono package. It has heated seats, Porsche insignia in the headrests, sport steering wheel, and Bose stereo adds a nice touch in the interior. But more than anything it was the color I wanted. I didn't want a silver or black one. It seems those two colors make up like 90% of these cars.

Here are some pic for now. Mook said he would shank me if I didn't post up about the car. So after two days of lots of driving, I took a few pics. So it is a little dirty.

Road america for you sir, one of the best tracks in the country for higher hp cars IMO

One the phrases that really made things click for me when I was still new-ish on the bike was "brake later, brake lighter", but test this in the turns that have plenty of runoff lol (so basically don't try it at blackhawk). The car or bike can handle way more corner speed than you think it can. Before I started thinking this way I'd push the braking zone deeper but just hit the brakes harder, upsetting everything and not making my lap any faster.
Road America is on the list for this year. I hear you on the braking. But ya, Blackhawk doesn't have much for run off. lol

Mid-corner is where I keep freaking myself out about. I feel like the car is just going to lose grip and slide off the track. Or have the "911 pendulum" effect with the motor in back. I know how to settle the car and not upset it. And the car has stability control to help against that. So it is silly of me to be worried about it. But it's just going to take some seat time to feel comfortable in the car. My lap times increased with every session. I know the car is capable of way more than I am at this point. It's just convincing my brain and getting comfortable with it. I am sure I would be a lot more willing to get after it if it was a Mustang or Miata. But since it's not, I'm ok taking it slow for now.

RA is definitely a solid track. One of my customer's ran his 997 Turbo up there and said the straights are fun, but his Turbo feels like a bloated hippo on the corners, even with all his mods. Said he prefers his GT3 up there and Turbo on the streets.
There is no one that is going to argue a GT3 isn't the car for the track. Weight is the enemy and the turbo definitely has more of it. And in the wrong place lol

Pratt is probably in Germany right now sitting down with Porsche's engineers to determine how much downforce he'll need to keep all 4,000 horsepower under control.
You got it all wrong. Porsche flew a team of engineers from Stuttgart to Glen Ellyn to meet directly with the legend.

I can show you guys my emails to the company that has my motor and money. Where since February, they have not replied at all.

In December I sent them the motor and deposit that covered 75% of the bill. Basically covered the cost of the parts. As long as there is nothing majorly damaged. The expected completion date was the end of March. As they had all the parts in stock.

No emails or any returned calls since December 10th. Then on February 18th, I got an email saying they were behind on projects due to a few guys there having covid. As well as they got the motor apart and a rod was bent. Which is common on these engines when tuned. So that wasn't a surprise at all.

Then no email replies until June 8th. Where I got an "I missed your last email..." Ummm you mean my last 8 emails and numerous voice mails??? He said the engine was on the stand and ready to be assembled. He said two weeks and the motor should be together. I think the build time to build the heads and assemble the whole motor is like 40 hours.

Here it is the 28th and I have not heard anything since the last email

This place is known for poor communication at times. And is always swamped. My tuner told me two teams also dropped off cars to get done for Pikes Peak. So I am sure those big dollar and highly visible builds were pushed in front of everyone.

Since it took so long to hear back from them, I didn't order or buy any other parts. Because if there was an issue with anything major, the build could have gotten way more expensive. So once I heard we were good, it was too late to try and order other parts (Turbos, fuel system, clutch, etc) as the turbos are 3-4 months out. So it truly is going back together like it was before. So no upgrades other than what was done inside the motor.

I get shops are always behind on projects. Knowing their reputation, when he said 3 months for the rebuild, I assumed 6 months. So not too surprised there. But the lack of communication was upsetting.

So you guys are all safe. It's still just a slow, old-style 911.

I was also going to save some money by not buying a clutch for $12K and have mine converted. Promotive takes the stock clutch and converts it to a dual-disc clutch for like $6K. But they said they are about 8 weeks out to do a conversion. This world is a clown show for sure. hahaha

Fuck

I mean, converting a single disc to a dual-disc takes some custom parts and time. But still way cheaper than a new dual-disc clutch.

Thankfully my $3K clutch has been ok at the power level I was at. Hopefully, that stays that way with the new motor and another 100 or so fl/lbs down low.
