🔧 BUILD PSJ's 1967 LS Turbo Camaro Build

General Information

Hi all, I bought this Pro Street 1967 Camaro. It had a 502 BBC crate engine and 8-71 supercharger. I have this driveline sold and it's getting pulled immediately.

LS + turbo is the plan. Maybe I'll keep it big tire and see who will want to grab a lane....

Been getting colder, so I drained the water out of the cooling system and replaced it with Dexcool. I also ordered a bottle of Ethanol treatment made by Lucas Oil, a few friends use it and said it's good.

I have 2 real to-do items I'd like to get in before the salt appears, one is dealing with my expired plates and the other is the alignment. Been driving around with expired plates for a long while and I think I've pressed my luck. I'm unable to get a new sticker via the web so I have to go in person. I'll do that before the alignment.

Other than that I need to do a little cleaning inside the car and figure out how I'm going to mount the buttons for the line lock, bump and trans brake. My pro ratchet handle has two buttons, I'm tempted to use one for the brake or the bump, I need to think that out a bit. In the past I've had buttons loose since I used them once in a great while. Not sure about steering wheel mounting, I recall they end up getting twisted around the shaft.

I still plan to swap rear shocks to double adjustable.

Tarmac Motorsports in Franklin Park did a great job doing my alignment on the fox. Mark there explained everything and was super cheap.

The to-do items quietly pile up...

  • Alignment, hoping for next week
  • Add window net, I need to measure that stuff again and order the parts. Would have Eddie Villadonga weld it in.
  • Have Eddie Villadonga weld the track locator clevis mount to the rear part of the ladder bar, just to keep the clevis from moving
  • Change 710 (oil)
  • Move seat back a little bit
  • Planning to order Smith Racecraft pinto rack conversion in near future, heard it would be easy to swap when motor is out, harder with it in there

Well car is running fine, but the front steering is sloppy af.

I need to rebuild it, I guess I'll do it at the house. Inner/outer tie rods, pitman arm.

Then alignment. I was seriously entertaining the idea of doing a Smith Racecraft steering kit but you can only do with the engine out of the car and frankly I don't want to do that.

Update, I have 3 options but have picked one.
  • Stock stuff
  • Smith Racecraft rack setup
  • Unisteer rack setup
I'm focused on the Unisteer setup, I won't have to cut the front subframe like I would have to for the Smith setup, and this one uses the factory arms. Here are some pics of what I'd be doing. It's $700 new from Summit but a guy on FB has a used one in CO so if the price is right and he'll talk on the phone I'll try that deal first. The installed pics are from a friend's Nova in Naperville.

Old gearboxes get sloppy.... most wear greatly just on either side of the Center Straight ahead position.

If I recall a good red cap reman steering gear box is easily five hundred bucks...
Speaking of steering slop. I had to change the power steering gear box on my 71 as it was pissing fluid. I couldnt believe how much slop I had before and after.
It was literally night and day.

So do the inner tie rod joints and the rack location actually equate to minimal bump steer as it Cycles?
I went through hell figuring out that s*** for the 442 with the SLA suspension and there was really no way to make it real good, without huge spacers moving the inner tie rod pivot point in line with the upper and lower control arm Center of rotation.

I think the best you get is just minimal bump steer I'd guess
