Thats a Hellcat, so the markup is sort of justified...

Well if install is 60k then maybe that really isn't a markup?
It’s $35k for a base Hemi and it climbs from there depending on what motor. I believe the Hellcat motors are in the $60k range installed! And I can’t believe how many of these are being swapped, the shop at America’s Most Wanted seems to always be full:

The 2020 Jeep Gladiator is on Struggle Street, according to Automotive News, an outcome which is somewhat surprising but one which we sort of saw coming last month. It seems that $33,545 is a lot of money to pay for a pickup.

By Jeep standards, that price is about in line with what you’d pay for other Jeeps—the base price for a Wrangler is $28,295—but it does seem remarkable that the Gladiator is the priciest of any standard Jeep vehicle, and for no good apparent reason.

Here are those prices per Jeep’s website:

But that’s all on paper (or at least the internet) at least, since Auto News says that the discounts have been heavy after sales dipped post-launch.

The Gladiator is competing with trucks like the Chevy Colorado and the Ford Ranger, both of which have a base price of less than $30,000. It also apparently is drawing competition from inside its own house.

One dealer who asked not to be identified said the Gladiator has been pulling customers from the Wrangler, which is fairly close to the pickup’s pricing. The dealer considers both vehicles to be overpriced.
“We were selling [Gladiators] until the last couple of months. We were actually selling the high-end stuff, but again, that’s because of the newness of it, and everybody coming out to buy the one with all the equipment,” the dealer said. “But let’s call a spade a spade; $30,000 to $45,000 is the range that we should be in.”
Jeep thinks it can challenge Ranger and Colorado in terms of volume.

“At first when we talked about the launch and everything else, they weren’t coming in this place saying we’re going to attack Ranger,” [Jeffrey Burnett, general manager of Millsboro Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram in Delaware] said. “They came to this place saying we’re going to have a vehicle unlike anybody else. Now I think they’re going into, ‘You know what? We can attack Ranger; we can attack [the Nissan] Frontier.’ “
Burnett said his store is selling 15 to 25 Gladiators a month, which isn’t far off from its numbers for the Wrangler and light-duty Ram. Nationally, Gladiator sales peaked at more than 6,000 in October before falling back slightly in November and December, according to estimates from the Automotive News Data Center, while sales of the Wrangler and Ranger increased as the fourth quarter went on.
The Gladiator is a strange beast. Our own Jeep obsessive David Tracy absolutely loves it, but whenever I see it I get a nagging feeling about really just wanting an old Comanche. The Gladiator seems like too much in just about every department, though then again that describes almost every truck these days. Mainly it just seems sad that Jeep’s ostensible objective is to beat the Nissan Frontier.

I'm really wanting one of these suckers. How many Gladiator owners do we have in here? Do you like it? I really want one with the 4:11s, hard top, and cold weather group. That's about it. When you keep em low on options the tow rating is on par with the other mid-size trucks.

My biggest concern is going from daily driving a peppy and fairly luxurious Volvo with 30 mpgs to a friggen massive brick that's likely full of road and wind noise. Is it pretty nice to drive? I've heard that the rear suspension makes it a lot more comfortable than a Wrangler. However, I haven't even been in a Wrangler newer than a TJ. lol

The Gladiator is nicer to drive than an equivalent Wrangler. It’s massive wheelbase is so long that it does a great job absorbing rough roads. But it’s not quiet by any means with plenty of wind and road noise, as you would expect from something where the roof and the doors come off. It can be high strung on long highway drives too versus something with IFS.

Why not a ZR2 Colorado? Will be WAY better on road.

I think part of the problem though (while I would rather have a ZR2 also), is that once you start dragging the Colorado through the garden of options, including ZR2, it starts getting REALLY expensive.

While I was talking to the sales guy at DeKalb Chevy/Cadillac last Friday, a new Colorado ZR2 with the diesel was pulled in to service, the sales man said that truck was $50k.

I mean, Jeep has been giving great deals on the Gladiator too, but have you seen their prices?

I dont think it's fair to compare them just based on price because the gladiator doesnt start with a 2wd regular cab... once you actually compare apples to apples the price difference isnt that much of a factor. Then add the offroad capabilities of the jeep, and the removable top/doors.

My buddy just bought a fairly well optioned north edition gladiator, sticker was just over 50k, he paid about 9k less out the door. I am not disappointed in it in the slightest, actually its better than I expected.

As far as the owner of it... he absolutely hates jeeps and the fact that everything is $50k now... but he loves the gladiator 100% its actually really weird lol

Ranger?

Don't get me wrong, I WANT to like the Gladiator...but for what they are charging, even at the blow-out prices, seems way to expensive. Plus, as a trip vehicle, I can't think of much worse.
What makes a Ranger or Colorado better than a Tacoma though?

Gotta pay to play, yo. If I took the money to buy the Gladiator I wanted and put it toward a competitive mid-size instead, I would have a very boring vehicle. It might be easier to drive longer distance, but lets be real. I don't go "long distance" THAT often, and when I do, I choose to take the 30 year old Volvo wagon.

That's an interesting take. I'm kind of in the same boat. I've NEVER thought that Jeeps were worth the tax, but the Gladiator just has me ready to open my wallet nice and wide.

I agree about apples to apples. I like the Tacoma, but to get one that's comparable to the Gladiator, you will pay just as much. Even then you're still not be able to take the top off. ?‍♂️

Modern engine, transmissions, and tech
None of that is better in my opinion. Some people like that, but I don't buy vehicles to have the next best thing. I'm much more impressed with tried and true. When you say "new tech", I hear "new problems". I don't have time for that. My daily just needs to work comfortably and reliably so that I can work on fun stuff.
