🔧 BUILD Upside-down M90 GTP build thread

General Information

When your wife gives you permission to build a racecar, you build a racecar.

This is what happened to me. However, all funding for this project comes out of my construction account. I really need a telehandler, so this is very budget friendly. Luckily, I've been stockpiling parts for years. This isn't an overnight build by any means. My goal is to make a 1/4 mile pass with it before the tracks close for the season. I'm taking a risk here and using photobucket for image hosting, so hopefully they don't screw me over again.

So let's start it off. I bought a 04 L26 motor with somewhere north of 100k on it and started to tear it down.

Everything looks good so far. The pistons are really clean. There was some junk sitting in the oil pan, but not much.

did you consider having the blower exit driver side?

may have given you more room passenger side for whatever- possibly eliminated that hardcore 90* turn your piping has?

That 90° turn has basically no effect on anything. But yes I did consider routing it to the driver's side. There will eventually be a turbo over there, so it would be just as crowded.


The air from the blower also exits from the rotors towards the passenger side. It's better to exit that direction, although it really wouldn't make a difference in the real world.

I think you need to watch this video. If you MUST have a 90* bend in the system, it should be a sweeping 90*. Your 90* bend has the airflow smashing into a wall which will seriously disrupt airflow/velocity which you want to improve by having the most straight runs/as little bends in your system as possible.

Your 90* bend has the airflow smashing into a wall which will seriously disrupt airflow/velocity which you want to improve by having the most straight runs/as little bends in your system as possible.



That really doesn't have anything to do with a forced induction system under pressure. I expected to see a bigger difference than he showed in that situation.

Obviously a sharp 90 is worse than a sweeping 90, and I'll probably change it over the winter. I would bet that I don't gain a single horsepower from it though.

For a couple reasons.

It's more difficult to make the sharp 90 like I did. Time consuming and expensive.

People that see it lose their minds because they think it's some huge restriction.

It is hard to make a 90?

You take a straight piece of pipe, cut it on a 45 degree angle, then weld the 2 45's together, and surprise......you have a hard 90. There is nothing expensive or time consuming about it.

If you can weld and fabricate like you can, surely you can figure out a better way to make a sweeping 90 degree bend vs a hard 90. Having air running into that spots will not only cause a pressure drop, it will create unnecessary turbulence.

Absolutely it's difficult to do. It probably took me at least a half hour to make that joint, and that's after I had everything set up for it. A sweeping 90.....take it out of the box, pull off the protective foam and done.

Do you want me to plumb a gauge in before and after that bend to show you there is no pressure drop?

I and others are giving him advice on bettering an aspect of his build. He chooses to ignore or be ignorant to the facts. If he wants to run hard 90’s and think it doesn’t make a difference then it’s clear he is either being too stubborn to change or unwilling to admit he’s wrong.

Either way it has gotten to the point where it is funny and I’ll exit stage left. Time to start a high end intercooler piping company that only sells hard 90 degree piping, should make a mint!
