So I was at the harbor last Thursday evening cleaning the boat and fixing misc shit. I noticed a new boat in a slip near the gate. It was a mid 90s 26ish Bayliner. It was beat up and tied up so sloppy that I was going to take pictures of it to post on here. I asked myself why would someone spend this much on a slip and give zero fucks about the boat? I ended up bringing my waverunner down to put it in the water. As I walked down the dock to my truck I saw a younger black guy on the boat now. He was inside with the canvas on talking on his phone. I waved at him and he waved back. Not to sound racist but it is rare to see black people owning boats in the Chicago Harbor system. I thought it was kind of odd. I figured I would introduce myself when I got back since they are new to the dock. Its always good for harbor relations. I went and launched the waverunner and went directly out on the lake for a quick BRAAAP. I was waiting for the light for the harbor to turn green and I see the beat up bayliner exit and start going south. Guy took the boat out by himself. Also kinda strange.

I get back to the dock, tie up and finish up things. I was loading some stuff in the truck about to leave and a few security guards walk up and one of the Harbor Masters assistants. They ask me if I have seen (this boat) and point to where that beater Bayliner was docked. I said yeah and told them what I know. They told me the boat was reported missing by the owner. Either a friend took it out for a joyride (probably) or it got stolen. I left before the boat came back so I will have to get a update this weekend. But pretty fucked up if it was stolen or "barrowed" without the owner knowing.

When you say he took the boat out by himself , do you mean he was pulling the boat out of the water by himself ? And you saw him leaving ?

Or do you mean he was putting the boat in the water alone , and when done putting boat in he went boating by himself ? And thats when you saw him while you were waiting for the green ?

I ask this because at the end you said , " I left before the boat came back ."

He took it out of the harbor on the lake by himself the way I read it, most people don't boat by themselves on the lake in a big boat docking is a chore with even the slightest wind with one person

Noticed the boat was back yesterday. Talked with the harbor master and asked him what the deal was. Apparently the guy who owns the boat is 2nd in command of City of Chicago under Daily. (or his brother) I forgot what he said. Harbor master said its owned by a old super nice guy. In the summer he would take out under privileged kids for boat rides. One of the kids took advantage of the guy and took his boat out for a joy ride last week. Apparently the owner didn't press charges after the kid returned the boat. Harbor Master told him "Don't bring kids out of the ghetto into my harbor if they think they can just climb gates and borrow boats, we can't have that shit here."

The fact that he brought the boat back proves he can drive better than most people on the chain.

I just wish whoever tied it up could have done a better job. Maybe used a spring line. The back of the boat is just crashing into the dock and no fenders.

Some people just don't care.

Security is supposed to be amped up this year. I've been at the harbor 4 times after 7pm now. There's been two security guards patrolling.

The gates really don't do much and it's easy enough to hop one or get the code/follow someone in. There to keep an honest man honest.

There has always been two security guards. I personally think security does nothing but gives the city the ability to say the have security at the harbors. I see them walk around but most of the time they sit in the cars. Its a new security company this year. They look like they were hired straight out of the ghetto. Last year they would walk up and down the docks and but I am not sure of the frequency. Haven't seen that do that yet.

They've been walking up and down every time I was there. It's security man, what do you expect them to do? They're there as a deterrent, not military patrol posting an armed guard
