Okay, so I contacted a company for a quote on anodizing dye (OD Green specifically) and they ship in 1lb minimums at about 60 bucks shipped. In reality that's enough to make over 175 gallons of dye at the highest concentration, and 3X more at the minimum. I'm looking to have more like 5-10 gallons of dye and perhaps a few batches as time goes along.
There's stuff on the Internet that tells how to do it, long of the short you'd probably want a fish tank heater, a few buckets, some lye and some battery acid. I think I paid $60-75 for this stuff. So for say a hundred dollar bill you could theoretically start anodizing.
