So my sister was rear ended yesterday while merging onto an on-ramp with one of those crappy "stop before merging" signals.

She was coming down the on-ramp and had to stop because the signal was red. Blue car behind her did not slow down and hit her hard enough that the hatch on her car no longer opens. So, bumper, absorber, possibly frame damage.

Obviously the blue car here is at fault, no questions there.

Her front airbag didn't deploy, but she was rear-ended so thats not exactly unusual.

She got a concussion as her head hit the seat headrest pretty hard. Impact was probably 30-40mph being that this was a highway on-ramp. Maybe other issues with her neck resulting later on. She was taken to the ER for a check-up.

My question is the blue car was apparently purchased recently but the driver, but not reported yet to Geico.

I seem to remember there being a grace period for the new car to be covered without being reported. I think my company State Farm says its 30 days. Because I remember asking about it when I bought my Focus ST and traded in my G6.

So, because of this lovely snafu, my sister might have to pay for the repairs and medical bills out of her own insurance.

Hope she's doing ok . Looks like a '15 Fiesta .
It was. My dad and I helped buy it for her over the phone when she was living in Seattle after her previous car broke down and would cost more than she owed on the car to repair. Plus it was a crappy near 14yr old VW Bug Turbo.

We ended up getting her out the door for 11k on the car. Concussion from the impact. She takes good care of the car, she's never had a nice car to drive before. So she is on-point with the maintenance schedule.

Washington state plates... Where was this?

Chicago.

That Impala is a dead car.

The Fiesta.... maybe... only saving grace is that it is a newer car.

impala for sure

fiesta... aren't they like 16-18k brand new?

my thought was it'll probably need a hatch, and with how hard the impala hit it, the fiesta will probably need a floor, and probably some obscure inner quarter part that costs $43 but pays 34 and takes 17 hours to install.

fuck, it might even need some quarter work on each side... then you're pullin' a lot of glass to work on that too of course

Glad that your sister is OK. That Fiesta seemed to absorb that impact fairly well at least. At this point, I'd cross my fingers that insurance will total it out. I'd rather have a new car, than one that's been severely repaired.

I need some parts from that Impala!

This is why i never stop at those stupid lights. They don't regulate shit for traffic flow and are more of a hazard.

Well. I tend to blow through them as well. I usually just coast and time it so it's green when I get there. But some of them do want a full stop. But I also pay attention to the cars in front of me.

I would hope her car isnt totaled. But we do have gap on it just in case. And since she has a loan it has full coverage.

Glad she's okay!

And holy fuck that Fiesta looks like it did WORK to that Impala!

Yeah. It looks like the impala tried to swerve too late. And went under the car a little offset. The impact was hard enough that knocked her glasses off her face. Gave her the concussion and she did impact the steering wheel.

This blows OP!

Hopefully this get sorted out and you and your sister are not screwed.

Curious on one thing - She hit her head on the steering wheel? How is this possible? No seatbelt on?

My wife was in a bad fender bender where a mini-van doing about 45 MPH hit her from behind in her Volt full on, no attempt to stop, and while the air bags in her car did not deploy, she didn't come close to hitting the steering wheel. The minivan was totaled, though. Both airbags deployed.

At worst, you will have to pay the deductible and file the claim on your own insurance. You could take the owner of the Impala to civil court, but, not sure if it is worth it depending on your deductible and other costs getting the car fixed, transportation while being repaired, etc.

Really hope she is OK and the A-holes in the impala get what's coming to them.

She sits close to the wheel as she isn't that tall. So she doesn't have far to go to hit the wheel. She didn't hit that hard, no real bruises from it compared to the initial impact.
