Tell me I'm stupid and I shouldn't do this...

This makes no sense. Trying to save money on truck fuel and depreciation by spending 8,500 on another car, which will require its own insurance, fuel, maintenance and also depreciate. Chevy's free maintenance is just two visits now. Small car prices - and resale value --are going to continue to fall with national gas prices staying cheap. Compact cars and hybrid sales are getting hit hard, which is why they're giving away these shit boxes.

It's the mileage and mileage alone that's prompting this. Take a $65,000+ truck and put 45,000 miles/yr on it for a few years and see what it's worth. That's the main issue, it isn't fuel, it's having a worthless truck.

Are you using a personal vehicle for business, or is the truck a business expense? I thought depreciation was a deductible expense. Possibly not enough, I guess. Not too familiar.

Nope, I drive 4 miles/day to and from work... All of the mileage is purely for "pleasure" to and from Hayward. Non-deductable, etc. I tow my ATV's there in the spring and bring them home in the fall, aside from maybe 1-2 more times a year, I just have myself, 1-2 friends and luggage. Completely unnecessary to drive my truck when an econo-box will suit us just fine.

With that being said, I don't think I'm going to go the spark route. Looking at one again yesterday it's just not enough vehicle for those trips. It's surprisingly comfortable for what it is, but, there's so little cargo space that I think that might become an issue without having a luggage rack of some sort.

Can you install a hitch for a small trailer?

I can, and typically, that would be my answer, but this car has 88 horsepower  I don't think it would appreciate a trailer.

Also, base mode does not have cruise control. That's a must for me as it'll be a highway queen.

As of now, I'm 95% talked out of it. I'll just carry on selling the bike for cash and getting a $4,000ish suburban in the fall. Having something 4x4 would come in handy up there in the winter as well, as I'll be going there year round. I can clear the driveway and be OK getting in, but if more snow falls, that little thing is screwed.

I guess the appeal for something like this is I've always liked trying to do more with less... My TDI was great for that, had a luggage rack and the trailer and that car was a tank. On snow tires I took it down snowmobile trails and didn't get it stuck. This just isn't in the same league with having enough power to lug around the trailer.

Miss Esa and I LOVE the mini cooper for that reason.

With the roof rack, and the box strapped down to it, we have the space and capacity to go camping, with all our gear, and our dogs, and still get 38mpg on the highway the whole way.

If it wasn't for the center exhaust we'd probably have a hitch on it also.

Honestly I think you should sell the truck if you are that conserned with miles and resale. Do you need a diesel truck? You said it yourself you only tow your quads up north twice a year. The other times you need to tow could you get by with a 1500 truck or using your parents 2500? Make some cutbacks. You work 4 miles away and put on 45K a year? Also it won't help when you apply for a mortgage with two auto loans, and you probably won't want the payments either when you own a house.

I myself kinda want to sell my Tahoe and vette and get a nice year round DD car because I really only tow boats or waverunners a few times a year. I can get by using my dads truck. The only thing that keeps me from selling it is that in the winter I do try to sled as much as I can, can't be using my dads truck every other weekend or so. AND I can't replace that tahoe for anything even close for the money that is comparable.

difference here too about selling your tahoe at this point, is it ain't worth much... his truck is worth a fuckton comparatively.

this is no joke, I don't have any routine long trips planned right now to rack up serious miles, but do expect a million miles out of the 6.7

I'm only a 1/4 of the way there on my F350! (60k of which is my miles)

I could dig a new truck at a million miles, but I doubt the salt around here will allow this truck to survive another 750,000.

I'd just plan on driving your truck until the wheels fall off, Frank. You've said countless times the only vehicles you didn't regret buying and love driving are your blue quad and the F350. Just keep em, screw worrying about depreciation and just drive em till they can't move anymore.

That way you get your $ worth out of them!
