Bought the Supra from SC. Drove it back, went to currency exchange, said the purchase price was like 12k (or whatever it is to get the cheaper tax rate) and titled it that way. Done deal.

Did you have to show any proof for purchase or anything like that?

I bought my 135i in vegas private party and registered it out there for the year. Private party vehicles in Nevada are tax free. You have to own the car for at least a year before you title it in Illinois else they make you pay the tax on it.

So how's that happen. Do you drive around on out of state plates for that year then register it in Illinois after said year?

You could do it that way. I think you can get away with driving it around Illinois as long as the tag is good regardless if it's out of state plates or not.

Bought a '98 Exploder from some shady character on Craigslist who had an Indiana dealer license. I just went to the currency exchange with the title and bill of sale. I paid for taxes, plates, and title transfer. It was no different than an in state transaction. The nice thing was I didn't have to pay the stupid additional tax that cook county charges.

Strong story

I bought the S2000 from SC and drove it back as well

but went to DMV and got it tax/title/licensed

If the car costs under 15k, they tax you depending on age of the vehicle, I think mine was only $25 because it's an 02 and was under 15k

I actually drove it back with no plates, just had bill of sale and title with me incase I got pulled over
