I plan on hanging insulation in my basement ceiling this weekend, and as luck would have it, everyone I know is either out of town or has plans.

Right now, it's looking like Saturday would be the perfect day to hang the insulation.

Pay is $12/hr cash, plus free beer and food.

It'd be a plus if you had your own ladder and had previously installed insulation.

I have a ladder but I've never hung insulation. Could watch some youtube videos beforehand though.

There's not much to it, I really just need someone to hold it in place while I staple it.

here's a lame video showing the process.. I'm insulation the basement ceiling, so there isn't much to it, just hang the insulation batt in place and staple the sides.

Yeah I figured. Just didn't want to show up and be like :retard:. I've done other home construction stuff before.

IMO, don't use fiberglass insulation after spending what you're going to spend on the basement remodel.

At a MINIMUM I would use Roxul Safe n' Sound.... Stone Wool insulation, great noise cancelling, you wont be all itchy, cuts with a serrated knife like a saw through wood so you can sculpt it to fit spaces better, etc... It's friction fit and should stay between the joists easily, but if needed you can put the little rods across the joists to hold it....

Another bonus is Roxul is essentially fireproof. I've put a flame from my mapp gas torch against it and it doesn't ignite...

Roxul Safe 'n' Sound 3 in. x 15-1/4 in. x 47 in. Soundproofing Stone Wool Insulation (12 pieces / package)-RXSS31525 at The Home Depot

For even better results you could do a flash n' fill where you spray the cavity with a layer of spray foam, and then fill it with roxul on top of that....

Dual Purpose Open Cell Foam Kits

That kit is open cell, if you need it to also be a vapor barrier then get closed cell stuff... More expensive but the amount of time spent working is cut by a HUGE margin. In my parents basement we did closed cell foam on all walls, then roxul in all the ceiling cavities and couldn't be happier with the results...

The only thing that would be better would be pure spray foam.... If you have the money that can't be beat.

Also, if you already got the insulation and it's Owen's Corning (pink panther) you're going to have to deal with a crazy smell.... Something with their formaldehyde free formula right now stinks like burning caramel or burnt candy... It's got a really weird smell to it... Hope they change the formula soon. I'm about halfway done insulating my shed and the smell is driving me nuts, I couldn't deal with it in a living space...

I've looked into Roxul Safe n' Sound and the consensus on avsforum.com seems to be that it doesn't do any better of a job at sound proofing than standard fiberglass insulation. Roxul sound proofing opinion - AVS Forum

That said, I'm still going to do the Roxul stuff in the home theater, the rest of the basement will get standard pink stuff. I'm not looking to make the entire basement sound proof, but a little noise isolation would be nice.

Roxul is approximately $0.70 a sqft and the pink stuff is around $0.38

I dunno.... We insulated half the parents basement with regular pink a few years back before Roxul was around the area and just did the rec-room with Roxul and it's a noticeable difference to me. Maybe my mind is playing tricks on me though... :dunno:

Was definitely much better to work with for sure... It was also nice to use it behind where I was sweating pipe together for the plumbing. LOL

Also, note the smell thing I edited to my post.... Just don't want you to wonder what's stinking after putting up a few hundred square feet of insulation.

I'd rather go the spray foam route, but I'm concerned about "sealing" in all of the utility runs, cables, hvac etc, specifically in the ceiling.. it could be difficult to access if I ever need to in the future.

IMO, the spray foam is great in exterior walls, but in a basement, the walls are already insulated by the earth, adding R19, is more than enough to insulate.

::: UPDATE :::

well the electricians were supposed to be done yesterday and the inspection was supposed to be today. Neither of those things happened.

I chewed out the project manager, because the electricians were originally supposed to be done on Tuesday, but they were shorthanded.. Anyhow, after all of my bitching and my sob story of how I had planed to hang the insulation this weekend, and how they ruined my plans.. etc etc.. they offered to hang the insulation free of charge.

yay me.
