So I was working on my toy the other day. Trying out a different intake system. Well my hands slipped and I slid my forearm across something and cut myself. I looked at the cut right when I slipped and it was all skin color and looked like a chunck had been taken out of me. Then I realized it was going to start bleeding soon so I went inside to get some bandages and cleaning medicine. Well I now realize its just a big cut, no chunk missing. It seems sort of deep bet hasnt hurt at all so far. So to the point of this topic, how do you know if you need stitches or not. Is it something to get checked out immediately or whenever you realize the cut isnt healing. So let me know if I am going to die soon or not guys...thanx...

Here is the deal.... clean it out as best as possible

-hydrogen proxide... or isoprophic (cant spell) alcohol

Next get some neosporin (cant spell either) gob that shit on a bandaid.
Then just wrap the bandaid tight against the wound to try and stop any bleeding.
The next day reclean the wound with the same stuff, and if the wound is still open exposed apply more neosporin and than rebandage it up.

Then about a day later allow the wound to get some fresh air after unbandaging it and cleaning it. After some open air (for a few hours) apply more neosporin and rebandage.

Within a week or so the cut should be healed well.

I cut myself real deep to the bone the other day and the cut healed within a few day completely with that process.

Just make sure when you wake up the next day you dont have a red line running up your arm from one of your viens. That means you got infected bad and if that line gets to your heart you will die. But if that was happening your arm would be throbing so you would know it.

If the wound will not stop bleeding or is to big for a bandage than go to the hospital and get it sowed up.

Other than that follow those directions and you will be as good as new in a few days.
You will be fine, just make sure you are keeping it clean.
Neosporin is the shit!!

Well I must have been channeling you or something, because I already did that process. I guess tomorrow I will have to let it air.

<stares at arm a little nervous to find red line>

<whew...no pain>

I agree neosporin rules. The cut just looked ugly yesterday though. Like a freakin canyon in my skin. But its good to know about the redline thing...for future reference. Thanx.

EDIT: To make repairs to my pitiful use of the english language...

jareds process is a good one. I use it alot myself.
however, it really depends on where the cut is, how deep it is, and what it looks like.
a 1/8" deep cut on the finger is alot diff than an 1/8 cut on the arm.

kinda a rule of thumb but not a set in stone is this:
if the cut is an inch or more long, an 1/8 or deeper and if is spread open wider than 1/8 (ie.... looks like a canyon). you should get stitches put in.....

Jareds way will heal nearly any cut without an issue but with larger cuts, you WILL have a scar. If your wound is spread open "like a canyon", unless you do stitch it up, it wil scar. Stitches are mostly for closing wounds, and prevent massive bleeding. It allows the capillaries and tissue to grow back together quicker and prevent further bleeding and infection.

an alternative to stitches on a wound like that is to clean it like jared says, pack it with neosporin then take small steri strips (they are like tiny thin bandaids) and stretch them across the wound to effectively close it, then more neosporin and cover it with gauze taped over the wound.

If you do see red lines, get to a hospital. that is blood poisening, it can be fatal if the heart gets infected. It is also a sign of Tetnis.

I rarely, if ever, go to the doc for stitches. I just give myself my own :p

After 24hrs you cannot get stiches any longer theres a time frame, you can always go to walgreens and get "butterfly bandages" they close the wound up tightly, they work well, also after about 4 days it will start to scab you can rub olive oil on there..In know it sounds weird but if you do that for the next few days the scab becomes soft and will just fall off and usually prevents scarring... not sure if your really worried about that part but it works.. lol.. But just go to walgreens and ask them for butterfly bandages..they work

heh, I wish I woulda known about that 24 hour thing 2 weeks ago heh (well my dad does anyways...) He was out working and when He set the chainsaw down... it sorta wasn't stopped and hit just below his knee... left a pretty big gash and bled for a while...

He went in 2 days later and they said it's too late for stitches heh ... though not that my dad woulda gone in for stitches anyways (he refers to razor blades as poor mans scalpels (sp?) ... )

Well thanx for all the suggestions guys/girls. I had a butterfly bandage on the other day, so I put another one on later. I guess its too late for stitches.....ehh stitches are for wussies..

but if you cut yourself and it DOESNT hurt, then that aint good

Well I guess its a bad thing then....I cut myself all the time working on cars and it doesnt hurt. Maybe all my nerves are shot....I need to jump start them.....Maybe I should stick a fork in a wall outlet and see it that helps.

Thanx for all the info, I will have to remember to always go to ILGPC for my medical needs... ;)
