I'm looking at bulldogs, and this breeder seems pretty good. http://www.mightymacsbulldogs.com/index.html
I know nothing of the breed other than what's on the internet, anyone had any experience with these? I'm looking for something beefy enough to put up with two boys, that doesn't shed too much, that's borderline lazy (so I don't have to walk it 20 miles a day), and these fit the bill quite well from what I can see.

Well, I found that the health problems are related to breeders that try and emulate the "olde English" look. They downsize the by breeding pug into them and it causes a lot of breathing problems. Those are also the one's that snort and drool a lot.

They are nice, I had a friend with one that had a great temperment. It's just that the energy factor on that breed is high. My house isn't that big, and have no fenced in yard. I want something short and muscular, that's good with kids and has low energy. The other two breeds I was interested in were King Cavilier spaniel, and Welsh or Cardigan Corgy. The King cavilier is a smaller breed, and is awesome, but my son would bee too rough on it. The Corgy's are nice, but they're nippers when young, diggers, and shed a lot.

How bout a mini doberman......they shed a lot though.

My family has had great success with BOXERS.....Great dogs. NOt to big, pretty strong and really, really good with kids.

There really loyal too.

Check out a few boxers while your at it. See if they grow on ya. My favorite are the ones with white snow paws, white chest, and brown coat.

Make sure you check them when there puppies....some of them drool (SP).....Mine dont though. :)

Just don't get a pomeranian...they piss all over, crap on the floor, and have the most annoying bark(if you can call it that) that you will ever hear.

I'd look into miniature pinchers, bulldogs, or even a short haired mutt from the animal shelter...some of them are actually decent dogd who just had it rough and need a little attention. I know you said you were looking for a smaller dog, but a short haired german shephard would be a good dog...I have a long haired one, and she is great to wrestle with, is very protective of her family, great with kids, intelligent, and big enough to wrestle with and not hurt them.( i love german
shephards...hehe). The only thing you have to watch out for if you pick one is ask about the lineage of the dogs family....you would need to check for hip displasia(sp?)...german shephards are famous for getting it around 3-5 years of age...but other than that they dont drool a lot, dont bite....really awesome dogs. :)

i agree with becky, our family had a small black terrier mix/mutt from the pound when I was growing up, she was the best!! And she got along great with our 2 Irish Setter sisters... We have only had Snaps the mutt and then 4 irish setters and they are great, great with kids, but kinda big and do shed a lot.

Good luck!!!!

yeah, retired grey hounds are great dogs!.....my english teacher has one and it is a very good dog. There really quite dogs. They just like to run a lot in the yard!

Plus, when you get them, there pretty well trained already. That and they dont put them to sleep if no one buys them. :(

I am most definatley biased. But, I will give my .02. My suggestion is that if you can get, and handle, two, do it! I have two and they are best friends. They keep eachother company and miss one another when they are not around. They sleep side-by-side and if I could do it all over again, I would! I love having two dogs. One is in the avatar. They are pure bred German Shepards. We picked them out at 3 weeks old and picked them up at 6 weeks. They have been with us ever since. They have GREAT temperment, are very friendly and loving and as I said before, best friends. They came from a litter of 10 and they are sisters. Neither is the Alpha, they are content to share. They are almost 80 lbs each. One is names Copper and the other is Gotti.

All dogs have a natural tendency to be loving or mean or whatever. A lot of it, however, has to do with how they are raised. If you are consistant and strict, you will have an obediant loyal friend. I went to a repuatable breeder but somethings you can't avoid. My dogs just happen to be alergic to black ants and cats so they scratch a lot. For bigger dogs, ask for papers on their history with hip problems. If you get a purebred, get papers on them. I have the history of my pups going back 5 generations. The father was from Brazil and the mother was from Chile. Made for some interesting pups. Some are all black, some are black and red, some black and white. Crazy how that stuff works out! Anyway, I had a bad expirence with a shelter dog, I can explain later. I have a LOT of GREAT books on how to pick out the kind of puppy you want (like how to predict their temperment, etc). If you want, you are more than welcome to borrow them. I did a LOT of research before I got my pups. They are 2 1/2 now and I can't imagine life without them.

I have a yellow lab at home. Its an awesome dog. Lazier than me and really big. I still wrestle with the thing whenever I go home. The only problem is shedding. But our dog has never bit a thing, and just ignores little kids.
agreed.

I won't ever own any dog again except for a lab.

white/yellow or black ones..

I agree with Royal on the Boxer. I love those dogs. My girlfriends parents have one and it get along with their 6 year old daughter great. It's hyper at times but It's real protective of her also.

They also had a retired GreyHound. I was a super friendly dog it got along with everyone and also got along with the boxer. Only problem was that it kept running off.
