3800 Comcast cable... internet

for those that have comcast cable ( or any cable) for thier high speed internet, I want your thoughts on the service...
do you like it? please with it? hate it?

Do you monitor your IP address? it is supposed to be dynamic. How often does yours change?

I am about ready to switch from my DSL line and want to get the scoop.
so far I am not thrilled with thier knowledge. I called several times and they really did not answer my ?`s satisfactorily so the is not a good start.

Let me know asap as I want to set this up this weekend.

THANKS!!!

Cable IP's are always dynamic.. they do not want people to use servers, so they will not offer static.

I already signed up for it.. and will use both cable and DSL for internet.

Generally the IP will change anywhere from 1 day to 7 days.

lol, I know all this, because I just got off of the phone with them.

and yes, most of them are idiots, the person I talked to seemed to know quite a bit.

they just arbitrarily change your IP?? even if you are connected?
at one point the IPs were static. I had to set that stuff up for our remote users... static IPs and they would come out and rename the computer.. caused us $hitload of problems when they did that since they could no longer authenticate to the domain.

well i am not too worried about the dynamic IP.. I will be using dynamic DNS from DYNDNS.com ;)
hell.. I have a static now thru earthlink and half the time I dont get it when the service is interrupted  so it really should not make a differance.

do any of you know how ti mask your OS?? you see those signs in peeps sig which tell the IP, browser and OS... can that be masked?

haha.. I think I know a little bit about computers... You are incorrect my friend....

Cable is dynamic, you can not request static (at least with comcast)
DSL is dynamic, unless you request static

The fact that you have had the same IP for so long, is pure coincidence.

I just got off of the phone with comcast, and their tech department. And I was also one of the first people to ever have a cable modem, when they were introduced in Arlington Heights, many years back.

I have many years under my belt, and have setup more DSL, and cable lines, than people have toes and fingers.. I know a little something about it.. otherwise I would not represent it as fact.

But thanks for your info.

now, now, let's not get into a "who's dick is bigger than who's" contest...

I was just speaking fact..

so chrys can make the right decision, the biggest reason he is asking..is because he hosts his own server... which they will not allow... they do scans for that.. (although they have so many to scan, they may not find you... at least right away)

THey're really good until they screw something up, and everyones calling them and their tech support has a line that says, "We're sorry, but the lines are too busy to take your call. Please try again later."

That one REALLY pissed me off. But, for the most part, they are really good when it comes to speeds.

My IP# is dynamic and I run a server without much of a problem (just update the ip# for my url). It only changes when I unplug the modem for awhile, if even that. I think I held an IP# for 4-5 months at one time.

Also, service interuptions will change your IP#. But I go through DynDNS.org, so it is really easy to change with a few clicks.

Cable lines are great. Rarely go down and are quick. They definately are a dynamic IP address, although if you are one of the lucky ones in a good area, they may not change your IP address. Some areas they do. I know one guy who has had the same IP for 8 months on his cable line. I know mine changes, I don't really keep an eye on it to see exactly how often it is switched, but I don't really do anything that requires a static IP.

ip that never changes. always the same no matter what.
I am sick of your attempts to challenge me. I am the administrator, and I have the right and power to ban you. If you persist this attitude toward me. I will strip your posting abilites.

I don't know who the hell you think you are. But.. for the first time, I have a problem with you.

I don't often anger, but your explicit attempts to "show me up" are childish, and show your ignorance.

A Static IP address, is one you own, and never changes. If you reset your modem, and it changes, you have a dynamic IP, no matter how long you have had it.

I hearby warn you, if you attempt to challenge me, I will be done with you. This is your warning.

Correct, Comcast does not offer static IPs but you can get a persistant/sticky dynamic IP. At least that's the way it was with AT&T Broadband before Comcast purchased them. I have no idea of their interworkings now. I work at the Bridgeton, MO AT&T and we use to support SAS, DHCP, etc. servers and new headend deployments for Broadband's National NOC in Denver. Now we just do circuit upgrades and some minor other things for the Denver and NJ NOCs.
