3800 Straight Pipes

would anyone recommend/dis-advise me from doing the following..i was thinking of leaving on the resonator, leaving on the cat, removing the u-bend, and then running straight pipes to where the mufflers are now, and then just putting on some tips with no mufflers. anyone think this is a good/bad idea? or any other suggestions for what i should do with my exhaust? im not looking to spend a arm and a leg here, just looking for something that will sound good and flow good at the same time. thanks

Sounds fine to me. That's what I'll be doing basically later this year. I had a set up with no muffler on before and it sounded fine. I had no resonator though and that's why I didn't like it too much (raspy). The sound level is actually not too loud.

I'm pretty sure straight pipes quite literally means no restrictions at all...no cat, resonator, etc Just straight from the headers into tubing deflecting it from the car. I'm thinking on doing that eventually (and getting all SES codes concerning emission problems erased from the computer). I'm not positive on the numbers, but running muffler-less would probably only yield a 5hp gain on a stock exhaust, even less on a cat-back.

The sound isn't that loud until you start hitting 2500+ rpm. Flooring it is a noticible noise gain, and any cop within a couple blocks of a quiet neighborhood could quickly spot you out. Then again, I'm not exactly sure how it will sound keeping the resonator on a GP.

Well, I had it set-up with a cat, no resonator, and 2 1-2" straight pipe. It's louder now with mufflers (performace ones). Mufflers tend to cavitate sound under the trunk. I would really suggest a resonator though, sounds pretty ricey without it.

iliveonnitro: are you saying that you would want to run open headers? no cat or resonator? i just didn't follow your post. that would be freaking loud. are you talking about at the track, or all the time? i took my car in today to get the flexpipe welded to the cat. i can't imagine driving my car all the time running open headers.

He is saying that it would go from headers into a cat back without a cat or mufflers. Essentially only pipes to move the exhaust away fromt he car. I could see it being tolerable at low rpm's and EXTREMELY loud at wot. Might just give that a try this summer now that i am thinking about it :D

It to could not stand it on my way to get my flex pipe welded
SO LOUD!!!!!
I woke my whole neighborhood up. I was really afraid of gettting pulled over.

even the slightest touch of the gas hurts your damm ears. Not sure how it would sound wiht the pipes all the way back, but would imagine it to be close to what I experianced....dont do it.

no it isn't as bad at the back as straight headers were for you. I thought it was hysterical driving to get my headers hooked to the cat back... I was laughing at every light when i slammed on the gas and scared the people next to me.
