3800 Broadband Speed Tests

i work for an ISP... so i like to see what other people get for service and stuff...

go to http://chi.speakeasy.net

run that and tell me what you were able to get from your house hold internet.

what are you supposed to get?? what do you get??

what do you use the internet for?? and how often does it cut out on you??

also... whats your monthly rate??

my results... from a single test were 4023kbps download and 2515kbps upload
this was what i throttled my internet connection at my house to be. (im special)

this service is a wireless service. typical service consists of 1024kbps down/ 512kbps up. usually tests at 980kbps/485kbps. this is through a router (routers can chop up to 8% off your thruput)
service costs $70 a month... there are very little hiccups in the flow of data. typically if there is a hiccup in service its for no more than a minute as the access panel resets do to some kind of issue it detects. there have been talks of backing of speed throttling a lil to let users surpass their "agree'd-upon-speeds

please help me with this...

doh! gotta install a java engine hehe (just reformatted my computer and started over.... damn Sun killing the Microsoft Virutal Machine)

will test today and on friday :)

I've got SBC 768/128 now... but on Friday I'm switching to Covad 1500/384 ... (100/month for SBC 768/128 , 70/month for 1500/384 ... long story about price... but if I change my SBC DSL they wont give me more than 384/128 for 30/month)

cool... JVE doesn't require a reboot so I was able to run the test immediately :)

Right now:
2003-12-24 23:37:17 EST: 627 / 81
Your download speed : 627247 bps, or 627 kbps.
A 76.5 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 81791 bps, or 81 kbps.

768/128 is what I pay for (due to overhead (forget the specifics...) max should be about 640/118 or something like that)

I use my inet connection for... well.. everything... web server, SQL Server, remote access, etc... (I experiment w/different software alot!)... also I use it for work (the software I program in is bandwidth intensive) ....

my upload is sucking right now cause i FINALLY got my web server back up and running (long story... server crashed last week, finally got the backup restored today)

Hoping to have ~1400/300 soon :) if I get that speed... I'm probably going to try out Covads 3000/384 package...

FYI.. just checked... i've used that test before (I'm a premier member of DSLReports.com (now known as broadbandrepots.com))

best I've recorded has been 633/110

(also... i'm still skeptical about the 1500/384 covad says I can get.... SBC says 384 is the max they can guarantee and covad... who uses SBCs copper ... says I can get 4 times that... and up to 8 times that.... I'll believe it when I see it... fortuanetly I can cancel anytime in 30 days...)

wow... i for sure thought there would be a few people close to 2mb...

im really liking this 4mb connection i have... ill throttle it back to 1.544/1024 tomorrow afternoon. no need to suck up bandwidth like that... its not that i use it like crazy... but if i spiked out to 6mb then i may start toying with others performance. and i dont like to even do that... especially with the holiday season and everyone being home...

not really selling it... cause sales isnt my job... but if your interested in service and thnk its in your area... let me know... the service is fantastic with about 15 minutes a year of cumulative down time. thats not to bad.

actually... 128 is the average for most people... and lag is a term associated with the time respond or ping times... and ping times have really nothing to do with upload speeds... I have at home a fast connection with a crappy upload speed.. yet.. I can see ping times lower than some people on faster connection... BTW... I win all bandwidth contests.. I am responding from a computer with dual OC48 connections... hehe...

what kind of wireless service does your place offer? And what kind of locations do you serve? I might have some customers for you...

lol kyle.. you say you work for a ISP company... you sure dont seem like you know alot about the internet.. sorry to say. Games do not take up much bandwith. If you will notice on a standard 56kbps line, which uploads at about 4.5k/sec, the normal ping would be around 200ms delay. On my cable line when i upload at 256kbps or around 30k/sec, i notice pings as low as 10, but averaging 30ms delay. Then again upload means nothing. Some nights when comcast is working on the internet, i can download at 150k/sec and upload at 15k/sec, but have a 500ms delay. Now on a 56k, i can download at 5k/sec and upload at 4.5k/sec and have a 200ms ping which is stable. But like i said before, games do not take up as much badwidth as say, opening a webpage or downloading/uploading a file. For games it is 50/50. You have to DOWNLOAD data from other users, whil you UPLOAD your own data. Therefore 128kbps upload is even enough for games. My brother was on a 1.5mbps/1.5mbps T1 line at college and i was on a 1.5mbps/256kbps cable line at home, and we were getting the same ping or ms delay to the same server. It also has to do with the upload of the server. But then again, when i host a game on the internet off my Cable, i can have 8 players join with 20ms delay. So it depends, for games... yes upload is used slighty more than download, but any broadband connection will give you good ping. :)
