black ice is good software.. we have to use that at work for any laptops connected to the network... though I disable it because it slows my system down too much heh (I have on OLD computer at work... cheap bastages won't spend the cash to upgrade).

Mcafee is a decent virus scan software as well... I'm partial to Norton AV (though they're latest issues are pissing me off... my license keys keep expiring and their latest patch doesn't fix it... only applies to web based purchases) but they both do the job and both provide very timely virus def updates...

what horist is trying to say...

Mcafee used to be good.. but now they suck... Norton is the way to go.. and if you want a firewall.. go hardware.. cause software firewalls, slow your computer down, aren't as good (I mean if the hacker is already at your computer.. don't you think you can get through some little software program)...

WRONG!!
BEST FIREWALL to have is a physical firewall! If you seriously need to protect your PC get a small physical firewall.

For some reason I have noticed how much software firewalls get hacked and they are also resource hogs.

ALso drop mccafee and pick up NORTON!

I use NORTON enterpise solution here at work and I luv the ease of it and how up to date they are.

Here is 10 MINUTES worth of info from my firewall from today. Granted ICMP requests are no big deal but read through. RPC Mapper is a virus and SubSeven is a network attack. I agree with Alex and ThaLord, harware firewalls are the BEST to use. No overhead and nice logs. There are some firewalls that you can use that are very inexpensive and highly reliable. If you want info on these, PM me. ;)

umm I bet most of the people out there without a hardware firewall.. on high speed internet connections, have been hacked.. and don't know it.. seen it many times already...

When they hack your computer, they usually don't do anything destructive... they just launch little ftp servers on your computer, that are on weird ports, and they can only log into... just using some of your disk space.. and don't bother looking for it, unless you are real good.. most are pretty good at hiding the stuff.

Hardware (or physical, as alex calls them) firewalls are the best...
