Mercury lied. Advertised 302 at the crank... just sales talk. Real World Horse Power........260....on a good day.

I'm well aware of the difference between rear wheel HP and crank rated HP.

There is a Drivetrain loss (Typically about 18%) from the Automatic transmission, which puts the car about 250/260 at the wheels.

I'd imagine 40rwhp can be gained from a couple of bolt-on's and a Tune. 3 valve S197 motors can, I'd hope 4 valves would.

Rz....agreed. Should order a SW/ Maucat set up call it done.
Was toying with the idea of putting 3 or 4 K into it over winter months.
This thread was sort of a fishing expedition to get input, Hopefully meet some nice folks and hire them to tweek the merc for spring. Zack comes to mind of course. There are others that do excellent work and have some pretty cool inventions. But you have the best suggestion so far...cheaper too!!

I did coils, tune, gears, cai, sway bars,.... still won't light the tires up. wondering if its time to stop pretending.

Coils really don't do anything on a stock motor, what is the 'tune' (Professionally dyno tuned, or canned tune? If canned, what brand), What brand CAI?, What gear (and who installed it)? And why would a swaybar help your power?

How many miles are on it? basic Maintenance (Plugs, O2's, etc) can make a big difference. And no-name intakes can hurt more than help in some cases...

As already mentioned, Exhaust will make a big difference, as will a professional dyno tune (assuming you just have a canned tune).

OP you have no clue what you are talking about.

Id be happy to give you advice, but I guarantee you wont believe it....throw the coils you put in there in the garbage and put the stockers back in.

Once you've done that report back for more advice, or go to mercurymarauder.net and talk to the dozens of owners who have over 300rwhp NA

Gonna throw 3 to 4 thousand at it this winter?

For 3 to 4 thousand, you can just Eaton swap the sucker. Be at 380 to 440 rwhp and call it done.

I'm at 400rwhp 410tq, stock exhaust and full emissions with my Eaton swap. All parts and a dyno tune cost me a cunt hair over $4,000.

This is what I'd do... Spend $1000 on bolt-ons and what are you going to end up with? A power band that's moved up which will likely yield you even less low end torque and a mediocre horsepower gain or supercharge it and get more horsepower and an assload of torque.

If you want it to roll the tires put a 3500 converter in it.
You need to get the motor in the power for it to run.
Ford fucked these cars for grunt. Take your motor that makes the least low end torque, stick it in your heaviest car and saddle it with a tight converter and moderate gear.
