Thoughts on an E60 545i as a "fun" car?

If it were me, I'd dump the money you made off the Grand Prix into a college fund for my kid. You already have the A8 which is more than enough to be a family hauler.
I appreciate the advice but I have money invested. I'm not some kid with money burning a hole in his pocket.

SMG? dont even bother....get a manual.
It's supposed to be a blast to drive but apparently the worst thing ever put into a vehicle as far as reliability goes. Then again, there was the 350 Cadillac diesel...

Truly I'm not looking for input on where to spend my money. I'm not sure how anyone here thinks they have a solid grip on my financial situation. I assure you, you don't. What I'm considering spending and what I can afford are two different things but again, it's not what's up for discussion here. The money is there for the car and I'm just trying to figure out what I want.

If I was talking about getting a GTO and keeping the A8 no one would be saying anything. It's the fact that I want to keep the A8 and get another similar car that seems to be raising questions here. The 5 series would be modified and would be something strictly for fun, something that I'd probably modify to the point where I wouldn't want to drive it daily.

At any rate, I have money invested. This money is open for another car. Please, no more comments about investing it. You can ALWAYS invest more. I'd like to have fun spending a little of my cash while my investments are maturing though. amiright?

Seems to me like this guy has a pretty solid grip on his financial situation, and probably has enough money for his kids to go to college and have some nice grad gifts maturing in an account somewhere. So back on topic, even though you'll have to deal with the smg transmission, I think you'll have a lot more fun with an M5. A modded 545 would be a nice car, but it just won't be an M5. It'll be worth the extra cash IMO.

Why would anyone modify a regular 5 series?!?! The idea of having a 5 series (non M) as a fun car makes no sense at all. Having two large luxury cars also makes no sense at all.
Maybe not to you but to me it makes perfect sense. i guess my definition of a fun car is different than some of you. The A8 is a luxury land barge and it's larger than a 5. It handles awesome for what it is but isn't exactly nimble. Plus it's nothing I'd mod. I just get in it and drive it. It's a DD.

A 545 sport is a very competent car and with a 6 speed and a few light mods (exhaust, intake, drop) would be a great fun/ nice weather car though with the 6 speed and quality of a dropped ride, wouldn't necessarily be something I'd want to drive every day.

Again, I realize it doesn't meet everyone's preconceived notions of what a toy car should be but it suits me so it doesn't really need to make sense to anyone else.

What kind of modifying did you have in mind?
Short shifter, a tune, intake and exhaust. Maybe some other minor stuff too. Who knows. That V8 sounds sick with an exhaust.

I've driven a 535, I just thought it was boring for me. Obviously, everyone is different, so in the end, get what makes you happy.

My dad had a 545i and an A8L. I’ve put many miles on both. The A8 is a far nicer car. It’s got an interior that sets the benchmark for the class and a plethora of options. It’s not a nimble car at 4000+ lbs, but it handles well and has good power. The 545i is a bit smaller and has a less luxurious interior. The 4.4L V8 in the car is very powerful. The 5 series is more rewarding to the car and the handling dynamics are superior to the A8, but it’s no sports car. It’s also a big car and is tuned more for luxury than sport. Both are very similar cars in my opinion. That’s why I mentioned that if you’d like a “fun” car, get something truly fun like a sports car. Hell even a 3 series is a lot more “fun to drive” than a 5 series. A 335i Coupe with some minor suspension and engine mods would be a fun car to own.

This was so much easier when it was deciding between whether to buy another SHO or another 3800... Maybe you should just regress back to that?

HAHA...When you go up in the price range you have so many choices. I remember my dad taking months to decide on a car. He'd want to test drive them all to see which one he liked best and would cross shop polar opposite cars like a 3 series vs. 7 series.

That was pretty much the same impression I walked away with after having driven the 530i sport. I was surprised at how much more the interior had in common with my Grand Prix than my A8. FWIW, the sport package drops it 3/4", adds wider rubber, active steering and active sway bars (they adjust firmer when you get into a corner). The difference between the standard 545 and the sport package is night and day.

I guess I have some thinking to do. There are a lot of cars that I can consider that are supposed to be ridiculously awesome. The Maserati Coupe, M5... I'm not in a huge hurry though there is a cheap 5 that just popped up with all the features I want.
