Default Bernie Sanders to propose canceling entire $1.6 trillion in U.S. student loan debt

https://www.washingtonpost.com/busin...=.070034107fbb

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) will propose on Monday eliminating all $1.6 trillion of student debt held in the United States, a significant escalation of the policy fight in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary two days before the candidates’ first debate in Miami.

Sanders is proposing the federal government pay to wipe clean the student debt held by 45 million Americans — including all private and graduate school debt — as part of a package that also would make public universities, community colleges and trade schools tuition-free.

Sanders is proposing to pay for these plans with a tax on Wall Street his campaign says will raise more than $2 trillion over 10 years, though some tax experts give lower revenue estimates.

How in the hell is there a single American citizen that is willing to admit they support losers like this!!!!

Make an agreement, take all the money, spend all the money & get the benefit from the money,
and now expect & demand you get to keep it with the people that actually earned that money get it stolen from them!!!

So far, it's reparations for blacks, reparations for LGBTQ, free debt payoff for college grads, free health care for illegal immigrants, etc. Anybody see the trend.

Money for everyone. Just vote for the DEMS.

How do we pay for the trillions? Whites pay for the blacks, straights pay for the gays, everyone pays for the college grads, everyone pays for the health care for other people.

NONE of this will actually happen if the DEMS proposing it are elected. There'd be years of study and analyzing how to best do it and none of it would actually be done.

Promises made... Promises won't be kept.

I agree, there is no way in hell they could ever implement anything like that. It's all just bait to attract the uninformed voter who wants free shit.

The only promises they're sure to keep are "take the guns".

Besides the whole problem of paying for this debt and schools in the future, what does this tell people? That you don't have to worry about your commitments?

But hey, free is the socialist way...

That money could be better managed/used.

A blanket relief program for all student debt is going to give a benefit to a ton of people that don't actually need it. I think they'd be better off taking that money and finding a way to reduce the cost of education in America. Sure, there are paths now to a decent education and not spending $80k+ getting there.

A college degree does not guarantee success. I feel like some people get these worthless degrees and don't understand why they can't find work in that field to help pay off that debt. There needs to be more education on.....education.

Not all student loans are held by students. When I got divorced, I traded rights to her pension in exchange for her paying for our daughters college. She took out student loans so she could fund other debts. Bernie or Warren will waive those loans, but I don't get back the pension.

Can't change the rules after the game is played.

That's a crappy situation. Not that this has a prayer in actually happening, but I'd be curious if you'd have any chance re-visiting that scenario if the law changed.

Maybe I wouldn't have chosen a cheap state school (Illinois State) if I had known it would end up being free. I need reparations paid to me by those who went to more prestigious schools!!!

Hey, if we're paying reparations, I think that American Indians should be at the top of the list. We stole their country and decimated their populations.

I can see trying to do something about making Community Colleges and Vocational services more financially accessible, as well as improving K-12 to be more useful for real life (which may include integration with the CC and/or Vocational systems, as well as helping to guide students to best utilize their interests and talents at earlier ages, as they do e.g. in Switzerland).

But this...? Wow.

i mean, community colleges are quite reasonable... really easy to get financial assistance if you need it as well.

I don't see why people can't just go to a less expensive state school(after community college). Unless you're looking at a field that only hires people from the top 10 schools in the US, it seems like a big waste to me.

They are but their curriculum comes much later than in a lot of other developed countries (I.e. at the secondary level there, post secondary here). This is true for a bulk of some of the trades too.

I don’t have a problem with CCs and their pricing or availability of assistance right now, in fact I urge most kids who are thinking about an expensive university to get their core stuff out of the way there. But the system as a whole could be better, if we wanted it to be and if we didn’t fuck up its implementation.

Then the American Indians can pay reparations to the poor casino dwellers who show up every week and lose their welfare check.

Nobody thinks about the casino dwellers. Their eyesight goes from staring at spinning wheels. Their fingers cramp from pushing buttons. Their insides burn from a diet of cheetos and diet coke. They need reparations.

Part of the problem with community college is for some job tracks it really doesn't push you forward. Most Nursing programs are 4 year programs so doing CC before that isn't very helpful. And if you don't get your Associates out of CC I feel like you have to deal with all the BS of which classes actually transfer to your 4 year school. I know for my CSCI program they wouldn't take most of the stuff from community college so I would have had to take 2 years of CC and 3 years at NIU.

Still makes sense for those people who don't know what they want to be and given I went to NIU we got a lot of people in after community college but it isn't always easy.

The only part I really agree with is that state college/trade schools should be made "free". I don't think a tax on wallstreet will pay for it all but honestly probably should given how much they fucked us on the whole 2008 thing. Plus then we wouldn't be spending like 15 billion dollars a year to put our next generation of people in debt.

Any expected tax on anything falls short of it's numbers for ROI because the Govt always falls short and corporations find loopholes . Trumps tax plan fell short of it's ROI and all the ones before and after will do it also. For that reason I would be apprehensive.

If we expected trickle down economics to work from Trumps tax plan then really making state college free would have a much bigger impact to move the metrics in regards to home ownership/large purchases etc and keep the consumer driven economy going.

there are community college nursing prep programs

also, once you get an associates from a community college, it's basically a benchmark from all the schools i saw and applied to.

i got an associates in science or whatever from a community school, and none of the schools i applied to after that cared what classes i had, since i had that.

This is why you pick a track at a 4 year school and then inquire with them about which CCs have programs specifically suited to transfer over... Don't most big universities have programs set up for this? They'll give you a sheet of exactly which courses you need and how they'll transfer over. I know U of M and Washtenaw CC had stuff specifically for this with Engineering and other paths I was entertaining, as have other big schools I'd looked into. I thought it was more of the rule than the exception but I could be wrong.

Now if you're unsure of major or haven't checked with the target school yet, then yeah that can be a gamble.

I don't disagree that is what you should do. But you have to know your path and some people aren't that organized at 18 years old.

This is stupid. At its most fundamental level it will contribute further to the dilution of value in US schools. What's something that's free worth?
