Default SD Card Corrupted - Recovery?

What are my best options for possibly recovering a corrupted SD card from my Samsung S7? Shame on me for not backing up the files via Google or whatever options are available. It sucks because I had some good video of our dogs that are no longer with us. Plus it had a lot of vacation pictures videos that I never moved to my laptop.

I know it's a crap shoot, but wondering what some options would be.

I was doing research online, but most suggestions involve buying some software from some companies I've never heard of that are likely just viruses or spam.

Don't format it.

I'd use a Linux boot CD and see if you can at least get it to mount to pull data off it.

Definitely a lot of crap programs out there.

With corruption, it's not always gaurenteed that the data is still good. The goal is to try to get as much off of it and onto working hardware. Then see if you can recover the data. You don't want to work with the corrupted device if you can because it may cause more corruption.

This!

I have also used Recuva which is both a free and paid software program for recovering data from a SD card (I've only used the free version). It works best on a disk that was formatted and your recovering data but I've also used it a time or two for corrupted. It's hit or miss with the corrupted, Tinfoil hit it on the head. Corrupted data is hard to recover from.

I'm not sure I understand any PC mumbo jumbo. I know Linux is some kind of operating system, but I don't understand how to use that to potentially pull data from a Sandisk card.

Linux boot CD (like Linux mint) is just a CD/usb you burn. Then boot your laptop/desktop off of it.

Linux will allow you to access the corrupted SD drive while windows will just tell you it needs to be formatted.

In Linux, you can plug in the SD card and try to copy the data off, (it should mount as a drive letter) Don't copy the entire drive, you only care about the files in camera or DCIM folder. Accessing it may be terribly slow, so use a PC you may not need to use for a few hours to few days.

When I recovered my wife's data off her corrupted/dying drive, it took 3 days to transfer 30GB or so but the data ended up being ok.

I can try for you if I can get the SD card from you.

It's gonna cost a pretty penny for a place to do recovery and it's not a for sure thing. Easily over $500

I can't believe none of you knuckleheads told me to pop the card out and pop it back in. I decided to just see what happens if I take it out, and put it back in.

It appears that everything is fine now. But I need to go and back up all these pictures/videos as soon as I get home.

Thanks for the offer @tinfoilhat !

I'm wondering if one of these numerous updates my phone had been doing was the culprit. I was just shocked an SD card of only 4 years would fail like that. I expect mechanical drives to fail that quickly, but not an SSD.

I figured you already tried that

#1 thing you always try!

An update could have broken its ability to mount until re-seated.

get that bitch in a computer and backed up!

SD cards can fail whenever they feel like it unfortunately. More reliable then mechanical drives for sure, but still can die suddenly. I've had it happen on 2 SD cards, both happened to be sandisk and havent used them since.

I have had very good success with Samsung EVO cards. I have about 8 of them of different sizes and no issues on any yet.

So is this why IT always asks the stupid obvious questions 3 times before they actually try to help?

Exactly! I didn't even think of it until just this afternoon. None of my trouble-shooting searches on the web said anything about removing the card and putting it back in. I only tried it on a whim.

For the uninitiated, Samsung has a program you can download for your computer called 'Smart Switch'. You just connect your phone to your PC and click a button to back it up. I know most Apple products do this via iTunes or whatever.

I would highly recommend it as I almost lost about four years worth of videos and photos.

home cloud with raid and external backup FTW

no third party, no internet needed to backup, no google scanning all your photos for AI data.
