Having run a large car forum for a number of years I'll expand upon a few things I've learned. Take them as opinion and just my 2c

1. The admin/mods do incredibly thankless work, no matter what they do they will get shit on by someone. Everyone should stop for a moment and thank them from time to time. Without them forums like this and others wouldn't exsist. No matter the amount of thanks given the criticism will always stand out so be mindful when bashing moderation or site rules.

2. members are 100% responsible for the culture and tone of the forum so if there is anyone to blame it's us. When shit gets ugly it's usually the staff to get the blame but in reality it was a member(s).

3. If you don't want this site to die just like the majority of other forums you need to keep it interesting. I loved the events that CSVT did back in the day, also when TCG did the auto show it was a huge boon to this site. I didn't attend the auto show but damn it made me feel good to see this site in such as positive light in the auto community. In short events (tour's, regular meets, cars & coffee etc) is what keeps the member base increasing. Without new members joining the site it will decline and die a slow and painful death.

I was an admin for CMC for many years, we were only successful when the whole staff including mods and event coordinators were on their A game. If they weren't planning meets, keeping shit moderated, member count and activity quickly declined.

Unfortunately the nutjob right leaning folks are still here. Coming from someone who's probably about as right of the moderate line as you are left when it comes to forum discussions. I have my views and prejudices but I try and keep it clean.

Also had no idea that was you, glad you're still around in some capacity.

I guess if it was one thing that I'd like to see change would be the lack of meets. I think people get discouraged by the lack of turnout, but, that's going to be how it is... Participation comes in waves, and, personally I never had a problem sitting at Luke's/Chubbies with 4-5 others eating a burger. Was just as fun to me as 200+ people in the lot. Seeing what once was, I can understand why it would be disheartening, but, at the same time, trying and "falling short" is better than to not have tried at all.

I probably only have 2 dozen TCG'ers that I truly associate faces/names to, so the giant meets are always a little awkward to Me and @Miss Esa I think. So even hanging with just 1 or 2 that I know and eating dinner is nice.

Big part of why I loved the 2016 Tour so much .

Near the end when a lot of the street racing people started showing up at Luke's it wasn't uncommon that 50-100 people I knew by name were there lmao. I got a lot of my car friends involved as well, even if they weren't members of the forum many are on the FB page and made appearances at all the meets.

Also good with the “On Topic” subforum being phased out.

Kill the “Shoutbox”. It has run its course.

The “Bored” thread and “Dem Tits & Ass” thread are the primaries.

I disagree. I think people need to use better judgment to just steer clear if they can't handle the BS that occurs in the political threads. I know I do. The ON TOPIC section contains a hell of a lot of good threads on investing, mortgage/home ownership. Financing, etc etc. Stuff that someone in their mid 20's like myself likes to learn about. As much as it sucks, we're diversifying and having the on/off topic areas keeps a hell of a lot of people engaged that otherwise would not be. Nine years ago I was 17 with a huge automotive passion, drive and desire to have cool cars and mod them. Now I like my trucks, what they can do for me but could give a shit less what new option package is available for the 6th gen camaro. Interests change, and the reason I'm still here is I can still talk to Carter about sleds and guns, KJ about weirdly optioned trucks, Alex to say anything I bought is the worst thing ever and to expect swift and fierce failure of all systems, etc.... But that's why I keep coming back...

I didn't really read this whole thread, so sorry if repost. Basically what I think is that all political posts, comments and discussions should be limited to on-topic. Filter it out of every other sub forum.

Another thing that goes by unchecked here that maybe should get a look at. Members are allowed to go at each other in threads to no end. It becomes a bickering match between 2 (maybe more) members, it gets off topic and people stop reading. I've been guilty of this plenty of times in the past, I know, but I've seen how it kills a thread and makes people not want to post.

I guess from some things I’ve seen on here I would personally appreciate more moderation. Maybe it’s the military side of me, maybe it’s because I’ve seen it from other forums but there should be warnings and then action.

I truly appreciate the “speak anything” mentality for free speech. But I think here the lines get a little too blurred and every now and then it needs to be reeled back in. For the most part its a great forum, but the perceived clickiness is hard to decipher through posts. I share the same thoughts on text messaging which has the same problems.

I personally like the on-topic area, I would just add additional sub forms for some of the areas people want to specifically go or avoid. Would also tweak the live posting if possible.

My two cents from a guy that hasn’t been to a meet since 2004 but has hung around 15 years.

You are asking the wrong people. Everyone here on TCG has accepted the culture and the environment. That's why some post not to change anything. We have the thick skins. The people we need to ask are the ones that have left like BADAZZTEALCOBRA said.

Is it weird that there are only two females that I can remember post on TCG? Is it weird that the amount of minorities, Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Arabians are minimal to nonexistent on this forum? The car craze is not limited to white male conservative gun toting right wingers. The Car Craze transcends all racial boundaries.

I belong to a private forum of about 10 dewds and sometimes a female. We are like family and have endured years of disagreements and BS but we still hang out in the forum. My point is, if you are content with the current member base, don't change nothing. Carry on.

If you are looking to grow and add members, then TCG has to be heavily moderated whether you like it or not. If it's a business then act like a business. Restaurants say "Welcome", not, "liberals, black and minorities not welcome". If you want to attract the next generation of car people then make it welcoming for new members. Adapt.

If freedom of speech is the top priority for TCG, then don't change a thing. I know I can handle it but don't criticize me when I dish it out. If welcomed, I will be a part of whatever Mook decides for TCG.

I left because of 3 things: blatant/unchecked racism, way too much political discussion, and a personal issue with another member. The first 2 reasons holding the majority of the weight and the third with a moderate weight in which I will not get into.

I feel like am coming at this from a unique perspective as a former moderator and member. I see a lot of comments in regards to needing to have thick skin and just not go into specific threads if you are offended by them. I have a few problems with that thought process.

A. While this is just the internet, this community used to go well outside of that and I viewed it as such. I honestly tried to treat others on this forum the same way I would treat them in person. In fact, I try to be the same person online as I am in person, I don't view it as a means to act like a fool because nobody knows me outside of my SN. I enjoyed meeting members at car meets and such. It was great hanging out with car enthusiasts and it is one of the things I have greatly missed in my departure from this forum.

B. I would love to stay out of threads that are political in nature, but much like others here I browse the forum via the "New Posts" button. The main reason is I like being in touch with the current topics being discussed on the forum. While I often don't intend on commenting on certain banter, sometimes I like to read other people's thoughts to better learn about them.

C. There are things that go on here that are just plain ignorant and childish in terms of racism. It goes well beyond not walking into a particular thread because I disagree. I viewed the members of this forum at one point in time as my peers, many I still do. In my life outside of this forum I would never associate or put up with people acting/speaking like the stuff I see. This is why I spoke my mind so much on this subject.

In a nutshell I feel this site lost its identity as a car community from a lack of meets/events/cruises outside of this forum. While there were some meets at times, in my opinion that meets often spanned way up North which neglects the community in the South burbs. Remove the meets and people start losing the sense of community, the sense of people outside of just sitting behind a computer screen.

Hammer that wedge even more with divisive political talk and racist posts, you wind up with what you have going on now. A site that is a shell of its former self, which in all honesty is really sad. I used to have a sense of pride being associated with the TCG community.

Take it for what it is, I think things can change with the right adjustments. Those adjustments can only be made if the feedback is honestly looked at and addressed. That unfortunately I am not so confident in.
