I believe it starts January 1st, and it will be a violation if you donít have one per vehicle.

This is on their site, looks like a transponder will be needed for the discount unless you go through less then 5 per month on a vehicle with no transponder. After 5 by license plate, it's full price.

Because people don't want one and that's their god given right to choose not to have one.

I don't understand why corruption is so out of control in this state, and legal robbery is allowed.

Its their right to not have one, but then dont bitch about the consequences. Or pay the $10 at Jewel, get a transponder and get toll discounts.

Or drive on roads with no tolls.

This seems to have nothing to do with the topic at hand.

The funny thing is IL isnt the only state with toll transponders. I dont know the rules in other states, but I wouldn't be surprised if they said you need one in your car if you are going to use their moneyless toll system.

Or go back to paying cash, and pay more. Choice is yours.

Iím usually the first to cry foul of shady IL politicians but honestly the tolls in IL arenít all that bad. Not to mention that you donít need to have an ipass, all it does is make your tolls cost half as much and everybody hates that- oh yea itís also free, people have that too.

Ipass is also part of the large EZ-pass system that basically every state east of the Mississippi uses so the convenience factor is huge if you drive anywhere state to state.

We still had to pay cash and get gaped using the Ohio Turnpike. IIRC it was 15-20 bucks to drive through Ohio. Which IMO is more than driving though IL.

When I was initially reading about this, I thought it was that each car must have its own transponder and that a transponder can’t be shared between two cars. But now it just seems like you can use the transponder for both cars, but the transponder must physically be in the car going through the toll to get the discount. Is that how it is? If that’s the case, that’s not so bad.

Yea thatís how it works. I had been doing that anyway not realizing it would work without the transponder. I think Iíll just go to jeeel and get another one though so both cars are covered and I donít even need to think about it

I’m sure it costs money to have people double checking and linking up plates to transponders. So you get a few freebies a month and then after that they charge you. I don’t see the issue.

My boss said new ones are mounted on the front plate. Ive debated switching to that one, but my only beef is the possible theft of it.

It's just a minor inconvenience to make sure you remember to swap the transponder out. I'm sure I'll go through the freebies during the two car season.

Technically they are free. Yes, its a $10 deposit for it, but you get that back if/when you turn it in.

I think they're just wasting a ton of $$$ trying to figure out all of the people that run the toll both with an I-pass and registered I-pass plates but without the I-pass in the car. So it takes the picture and says it's a violation until someone wastes their time figuring out they have an I-pass but they don't have it in the car.

Repost? I know a ton of people that do that, and I can totally see how that is annoying AF to waste your time figuring out when they could just put it in their car.

I would hope it is an automated system of sorts and that they don't have a person visually reviewing each violation and then doing some kind of correction in the system. If that's the case, then yeah, they're spending stupid money.

It's Illinois, even IF it was automated, if they can make more money by having to spend less keeping it going and gain even more by forcing people to help them do that, they'll do that.
