No typo. It also says obo. Not giving the car away with all the money and time invested. It's next to a brand new car with all the work and parts that were put into it.

We sold one over summer 2004 alero silver, clean title, no wrecks dents or major scratches, four door v6, 78-80xxx miles, power window ,locks, driver seat, cloth,cd. Gls model got 7400 for it over summer the v6 models were selling at dealership for 9-11k. Had the car since 2003 and only changed a set of tires, and basic maintenance. No hiccups what so ever. I think his price is fair since a repaint, but don't forget these are great starter cars for high school age or college bound kids.

That is a fair price considering we just put all new gaskets from the head gaskets up. There is no rust - no scratches - new tires - new brakes - new carpet and floor mats title in hand - the list goes on...
You can buy these all day long at the dealer for this price but then you would still need to do all the maintenence - This car has all that b.s done already.
And again asking $6000 or best offer.

That's a clean alero. Problem is it's a alero. There are quite a few clean ones out there with similar mileage for a lot less. I know this because I just helped a friend pick up a super nice one silver/leather/moonroof/polished wheels and 113k miles for way less then the one listed. Sure it needed a wheel hub but what gm car doesn't. We looked at quite a few too trying to find a non rusted out one. There are surprisingly a lot out there.

If the price on this car was around 4000-4200 it would be gone already just saying. That's the high end of what these cars go for privately. Also with a private sale when you get above 5k it's hard for people to come up with that much money with out financing. It's hard to get a decent loan on a car that old with well over 100k on. It sucks but that's just the way it is.

I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but there's a couple problems with your attempts to justify your asking price. For starters, you blindly make the accusation that the cars at the dealers don't have new gaskets, and/or tires, and/or brakes, etc. How do you know the history of all the Aleros at all the dealers in the Chicagoland area? And more importantly, a car guy should know you never, EVER take the money you spent on repairs and maintenance into consideration when pricing a car. It's not a house where investing in renovations, repairs or updates usually pays off by adding value to the home. With a car, you eat the entire cost of ownership. All that money spent on repairs and maintenance is money you have permanently lost, and are things you HAVE to do just so you can ask fair market value for the car. In other words, when KBB, or the Black Book or what have you says a car is worth $5k in excellent condition, that means the car has nearly flawless paint, nearly flawless interior, needs nothing mechanically, etc. in order to be worth that kind of money. If you were willing to spend more than the car is worth to get it to that condition, that's on you. You can't expect the NEXT owner of your current car to pay for YOUR cost of ownership by inflating the price of the car to recoup (in whole, or in part) the cost of the repairs/maintenance it took to get the car to that condition. I mean certainly you can ask that much, but basically, you'd be waiting for a buyer who is extremely ignorant to the market value of that specific car.

Speaking of value, according to KBB, even if you had a fully loaded GLS, and even if the condition was classified as EXCELLENT (only 3% of cars qualify for this category), the private party market value is only around $3,500. Even RETAIL (dealer) is only around $4,800, and that's for a nearly mint condition, higher trim level, much better equipped version of your car. Again, ordinarily I wouldn't have said anything (your car, your choice on the price), but since made an argument for why your asking price is "fair", I had to point out the flaw behind your logic. It's a very clean car from what I can see, but unfortunately, for a 10 year old Olds Alero, it takes a super clean, exceptional condition example just to be worth around $4000. Welcome to GM resale values.
