From the recent research I did on Cummins forums most guys say 2hrs before leaving is all you need even in the negative temps and you do not needed to plug them in unless its single digits and colder. It also said most heating element's came in 750w and could be bought with the optional HD 1000w ones, so leaving them plugged in all night is a good way to waste money... A good number of these were guys up in Canada saying this. I just put mine on for 1hr and 20 minutes and haven't driven it since Thursday night, it started right up like nothing but not all Diesels are the same... Most Cummins start great in the cold.

And also schools are already closing and doing late starts rofl.

God being a kid these days is easy. Shit I remember having to wake up at 4 am to watch the news and start at the scrolling school closings only to find out most times your school was open while it was snowing outside

All block heaters need at least 3 hours to reach their maximum potential.

The heater should keep the coolant just about into 100* in single digit temps. My coolant temp was 103* with an oil temp of 77* today with block heater. Set a timer for 3 hours before you plan to start the truck. And another 15 mins of idle before you move. Any sooner and youll gel/wax up due to fuel not being warm and flow increasing. As always, be heavy with the Additive and I'm not talking red bottle 911

Besides the waste of fuel, any negatives to just letting them idle all night long?

If itís a rental truck or newer truck most have programs in them to shut off the idle after 10-15 minutes. Excessive idling causes plugged up DOCís and DPFís.

We rented a truck to move a few years back and it had a lift on the back. Engine shut down every 10 or so and we had to keep restarting it to use the lift.

I’m just about to hit the road. It’s the fine powdery stuff. 25 mph sustained winds, so it’s blowing sideways

Woodstock got about 5”. Tough to say because it’s that really small granular snow that blows around easily.
