(CNN)The carcass of a pregnant sperm whale that washed up in Sardinia, Italy, last week had 22 kilograms (49 pounds) of plastic in its stomach, and was carrying a dead fetus, the country's environment minister and a marine life non-profit organization said.

Luca Bittau, president of the SeaMe group, told CNN the beached mammal's remains contained "garbage bags ... fishing nets, lines, tubes, the bag of a washing machine liquid still identifiable, with brand and barcode ... and other objects no longer identifiable."

"She was pregnant and had almost certainly aborted before (she) beached," he said. "The fetus was in an advanced state of composition."

I agree that polluting the oceans is bad. Where do you want to start fighting against it?

From Audobon:

There’s a veritable shit ton of plastic floating around in the world’s oceans—between 10 and 30 billion pounds of it, to be imprecise—and more than half of it comes from just five countries.

Those countries are China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam, according to a report from the Ocean Conservancy and the McKinsey Center for Business and Environment.

Good source there.

"An advanced state of composition."

Really? The fetus is being put together? How can a reporter who uses words for a living get it so wrong?

The correct term would be decomposition, the act of decay.

If the reporter is wrong about something as simple as that...
Then surely is wrong about the amount of plastic found it its body. Another hoax revealed.

More likely, is slanted to be a whale with plastic story rather than a story about a whale with a calf decomposing in her body (which probably killed her) and also had 50 lbs. of plastic in her system.

Again, as far as morals and keeping the planet clean, let's go after the 5 top plastic polluting countries on that list. Any ideas on how to do that?

I would like to start by doing what’s in our control, just because they are doing it doesn’t mean we should just say fuck it and add to it

You nailed it! Other countries just dump shit with no regard, but we in the states need to regulation everything down to simple dogshit! Why do we need to make up for everyone else's bullshit. Those countries need to be held accountable.

We are doing something about it and much more than most other countries, especially the "bad" polluters.

Left wing articles somehow never mention this.

The Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships (APPS) (PDF) (21 pp, 218 K, About PDF)
The APPS (33 U.S.C. §§1905-1915) implements the provisions of Marpol 73/78, the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution From Ships, 1973 as modified by the Protocol of 1978. ("Marpol" is short for marine pollution.) In 1987, APPS was amended by the Marine Plastic Pollution Research and Control Act. The MPPRCA requires EPA and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), to study the effects of improper disposal of plastics on the environment and methods to reduce or eliminate such adverse effects. MPPRCA also requires EPA, NOAA, and the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) to evaluate the use of volunteer groups in monitoring floatable debris.

Marine Debris Research, Prevention, and Reduction Act (MDRPRA) (PDF) (8 pp, 136K, About PDF)
The MDRPRA established programs within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the United States Coast Guard (USCG) identify, determine sources of, assess, reduce, and prevent marine debris. MDRPRA also reactivates the Interagency Marine Debris Coordinating Committee, chaired by NOAA.

Shore Protection Act (SPA)
The SPA is applicable to transportation of municipal and commercial wastes in coastal waters. The SPA aims to minimize debris from being deposited into coastal waters from inadequate waste handling procedures by waste transporting vessels. EPA, in consultation with the Coast Guard, is responsible for developing regulations under the SPA.

Marine Protection, Research, and Sanctuaries Act (MPRSA)
The MPRSA, also called the Ocean Dumping Act, generally prohibits:
transportation of material from the United States for the purpose of ocean dumping;
transportation of material from anywhere for the purpose of ocean dumping by U.S. agencies or U.S.-flagged vessels; and
dumping of material transported from outside the United States into the U.S. territorial sea.

The BEACH Act of 2000
The Act defines coastal recreation waters as the Great Lakes and marine coastal waters (including coastal estuaries) that states, territories, and tribes designate in their water quality standards for use for swimming, bathing, surfing, or similar water contact activities.[/B]
