Alien ant farm - smooth criminal came on the radio today and brought me back. I remember singing that song as a kid and my mom noticing and saying “oh you like Michael Jackson now!” Much older now and I appreciate both versions.

Couple others off the top of my head that I remember having a same thing have happen.
Live and let die, thought it was GnR originally.
More recently, “Stay” - thought it was a Jackson Browne song but it’s a guy by the name of Maurice williams from the zodiacs.

Who else has been mind-fucked when they found out a song they enjoyed wasn’t an original?

I knew these were all cover songs. The only original band name I knew off hand was the first one. I had to look up the other original artists.

Hard to Handle - The Black Crows - Otis Redding

Dazed and Confused - Led Zepplin - by Jake Holmes

Come on Feel the Noise - Quiet Riot - by Slade

I love Rock and Roll - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts - by Arrows

Hey Joe - Jimmy Hendrix - by The Leaves

Also, The Ballad of Hollis Brown was done by Rise Against. I knew that was a Nina Simone song. Only to find out that she covered it too. Bob Dylan wrote the song.

Go ahead. I'll catch up.

So many famous songs were covered better than they were originally sung.

RESPECT - Aretha Franklin (Otis Redding)
House of the Rising Sun - Animals (Clarence Ashley)
Turn the Page - Metallica (Bob Seger) - both good versions.
Proud Mary - Tina Turner (Creedence Clearwater Revival)

CCR didn't sing Proud Mary like Tina did.

Some surprising ones in here for sure.

Props to the OP for thinking of posting a thread like this.

I wouldn't call this one a remake but Kid Rock - American Bad Ass uses the same instrumentals from Metallica's Sad But True

This isn't totally uncommon though

They call it sampling. It is big in the hip hop scene. But common elsewhere for sure. That could be its own whole thread. lol
