I'm taking an intro to welding class at community college and am in need of a good helmet and jacket. I want an auto darkening helmet that can go from 5-13. This is something I don't want to cheap out on and am looking to spend up to $300. Any recommendations?

Do you plan on welding professionally? I bought myself a good helmet when I got started and it just sits on the shelf. I just use a hand shield, I'm sure others will mock me for it!

not gonna weld professionaly, just like having good quality stuff. Spent far too much time buyer harbor freight junk when I was younger

I used a Hobart auto-darkening helmet for many years, and I'm sure I lost a good bit of vision from it. Lastyear, I bought a 3m speedglas. It's awesome. I'll never buy another cheap helmet again.

I have a Jackson Balder BH3 helmet. I like it. I had a Harbor Freight auto darkening helmet before, but stopped using it when I started Tig welding. The cheap harbor freight helmet was too slow to respond.

I started mig welding in '95...got this shield with my welder and have been using it ever since. Hard to flip a visor/helmet when you have 6" to work with under a car. My welder isn't much different than the one in the picture either...will handle 99.9% of all welding jobs. Although I've modified it over the years quite a bit.

For MIG welding, I just use the heavy Harbor Freight MIG welding gloves. I know there is lighter and more comfortable options, but those have protected me pretty well.

I got a free Hobart auto darling one with my welder from welder supply. After a couple months I upgraded to a better one from Cornwell tools. I’d just go to your local welding supply store, they will make a good suggestion.

I’ve found that my local welding supply (not airgas) actually matches or even is cheaper than cyberweld.

Check with EWS in Elk Grove Village. I used to use them a lot...good selection and prices. They have a tank exchange program there that is very reasonable
