So about 4 to 5 years ago i built my computer, it is meant for holding porn and other movies streaming to plex. Up until now it has worked flawlessly and now I am completely lost....

So about the build...
Intel i5-3570k processor
16gb ram
Gigabyte GA-B75m-HD3
256 SSD drive
2 tb other pos drive.

Not sure any of that is relevant, but the main problem is that my HDMI port or my DVI port are working? I have tried different monitors, different cables, nothing. However my VGA cable works...

Any suggestions?

Also if my MOBO is shot could i possibly put this processor and ram into an Mini ITX case/board?

I can put shit together but i dont know chipsets and all the bullshit that goes along with it if you know what I mean.

So the connections are built into the motherboard and not a stand-alone video card?

It might be electrical ware over time and the outputs just shorted out due to use. That can happen, especially if this was specifically for watching video and stuff. I've had it happen to a build about 10 years ago and just threw in a new video card for about $100 and it worked great.

In order to know what mobo you need to buy, you need to know your socket type.

This Newegg search should help out a bit, but the Mini ITX socket 1155 boards are not cheap. Based on the prices depending on what you can find via other sources like Ebay and Amazon I'd consider ditching the whole system.

If you eliminate ITX from the combo, and just look at Mobo's then it becomes a ton cheaper.

Still, since its just the video portion thats screwed up, I'd buy a cheapo video card to drop in the Mobo you do have already. That would be the most cost effective option.

You can get a usable video card for super cheap. Hell, if you can tell us what Mobo you do have, some of us may even have a junk video card just laying around from an old build.

FUCK didn't think a MOBO would be so expensive! Its cheaper to just buy a new setup!

It's possible some BIOS config changed where the default video output is now the VGA connector. Check the video settings in the BIOS.

If that fails, just get a cheap video card and call it a day. That would be easier than trying to find a motherboard that still supports a gen 3 Intel i5 CPU.

How about this:
Cheap ass video card with HDMI

Damn I will probably have to do that route...

Does anyone know where I can get a small mini atx case? I have a standard tower right now but I want a smaller case and I haven't had any luck finding smaller cases..

Microcenter carries a selection if you want to look at them in person. But any case that takes a Mini-ATX style board is going to be close in size to a Mid-Tower case.

Most "Mini" cases that use Mini-ITX style boards are slightly larger in size than a Shoebox. A Mini ATX case would be twice the size.

If you aren't doing anything serious and don't need massive firepower (aka just general Email/Web browsing) look into a Intel NUC. Its the size of a a Hockey puck, but there is no upgrade path with it. So you'd be relying on external storage and the system is built as a single unit. About the only things you can upgrade inside are the HD and the Ram. CPU is soldered to the tiny Mobo.

Can an NUC run plex? Thats all i really run that is heavy ish and 99% of the time only one screen.

Can it run as a Plex Player or Server?

As a player yes, the i3 will do 1080p all day long. But 4k is a bit choppy sometimes. Its not a flawless experience.

The i5 version should be capable of doing 4k without any break-up choppiness.

Intel should be releasing new i3/5 versions at some point which use the new 8th gen systems and should be a big improvement. Some of the i7 versions are out now, but not cheap.

Intels part# scheme tells you what generation CPU it uses. The # after "NUC" denotes the CPU generation.

BOXNUC8 is an 8th gen system, while BOXNUC7 uses a 7th gen CPU.

There are people who have done it. I think you'd be fine with the i3 as long as it was just 1, maybe 2 streams.

Forget 4k though. If its a server, I'd go i5.

Your current desktop with its i5-3570k is faster than a 7th generation i3 NUC and would make a better server. Its slightly slower than an 8th generation i3.

The nice thing about a Plex server is that its headless.

You make the file shares, install Plex, and point them to the media folders. And then you basically manage the entire thing through a web-page, and network shares. If its windows use Remote Desktop Connection to do major stuff from any other box in the house.

I think the best route now is to just put a video card in my current one and go from there.... uggh that sucks I was looking forward to upgrading haha.

Thats what I'd recommend. Easy, fast fix.

Save the money for a bit longer and build a new rig later on down the road with much better parts all together.

How much is a cheap nuc and will it run windows 7-10? Or should I build mini itx

Can buy a cheap NUC with an i3-7100, 8GB RAM, 128GB M.2 SSD and a Windows 10 Pro license for $500.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07522YV5M/?tag=tcg21-20

With NUCS the CPU is soldered into the mainboard and not upgradable. So, you have to decide if you can live with the CPU.

Personally, I'd with for the i3 8th gen NUCS or buy one of the 7th gen i5's when the 8th gens Come out.

The Kits have everything but the RAM, SSD, and Windows 10 OS license. So you could assemble a NUC kit pretty cheap if you have compatible hardware lying around. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MSZLO9P/?tag=tcg21-20

Price wise, they are on-par with actually building your own PC currently.

But the time you add up Case, PSU, Mobo, CPU, RAM, and HD, they can get expensive. $500 for the all in one NUC isn't bad for what you get, and the form factor is really nice for with spots. You can bolt it directly to the back of your monitor and keep it out of sight, however the power button wouldn't be in a nice place.

So back to this... I ended up narrowing it down that the video card section was bad so I just ran of VGA....

Now I have thought about this and think I want to run the computer headless, so I was thinking about...

buying a stick computer for my monitor and using that for daily tasks (literally just google, and gmail. and controlling the computer, would like windows 10 for the wife as she uses as well.

What stick do you recomend for this?
Is team viewer still the go to? If not what software to run via headless.

Should I run the headless on a powerline adapter (way far away from modem) or should I just buy mesh network?
