Apparently you can download the maps and use Google Maps on your phone offline, where it will work with the GPS signal on your phone even if you don't have cell service. 2015 Article: https://www.outsideonline.com/2038406/how-well-do-google-maps-work-offline-absolutely-flawlessly

Here is a more recent article about it: https://www.airfarewatchdog.com/blog/40171659/no-signal-ways-to-use-your-phone-gps-without-data/

This is what I do. It takes a lot of memory and storage but works great. I just did this a few weeks ago in the Netherlands and I won't be bringing my Garmin back anymore.

I like using my Garmin on road trips still. You can go to their website and download the latest maps and software.

It's nice having your phone free. It's annoying using the phone for GPS and someone calls or you need to make a phone call. Plus it's nice to have if going to Canada or driving in the mountains with spotty cell service.

yeah, that was my thought process, phone is free for streaming or whatever, garmin can either sit in the glove box or just run and i wont have to worry if i get lost. kinda nervous taking the kids to Colorado being this young so I'm being over paranoid Dad I suppose

@MG, I updated for free but latest maps are $50, which isn't bad I thought it would be much worse
