Router Firmware updates

I was wondering, is updating router firmware a thing you should do? I was reading that it is good for keeping up to date with security fixes. I have an AC1700 Netgear and I believe I can set it up to do auto updates. If it is good, I will set it up to do this.

I just thought I remembered that if your router is running good to leave it alone. Any input would be great. Thanks.

YES it is a thing you should do. There were some Linux vulnerabilities that recently have put routers in jeopardy.

Ac1700 nighthawk was one that had a serious leak about 3-6 months ago.

I own one as my main unit. I manually updated mines. Takes a like 5 minutes max.

Anyone running dd-wrt or similar? I'm thinking of switching over

Yes, it's important to update them, especially with those two recent vulnerabilities which were discovered.

Of course updating firmware always carries that risk that you will brick the device. It's rare, but I've seen it happen.

Switch to dd-wrt. Much better updates then consumer router manufacturers.

Or run everything behind a hardware firewall

Better yet, switch to enterprise equipment...

I have one I have DD-WRT installed on haven't made the cutover yet. I should really do that. Then again I should really just take my Atom server and install DD-WRT on it instead with a NIC.
