Why did Metallica's LOAD get so much hate?

Ive never been a "diehard" fan but Ive of course listened and owned (purchase or download) almost all their albums (not so much the last 2 or 3)....Load stands out as one of my favs but it seems I'm in a minority. I've always wondered why...

"Diehards" probably aren't a fan because it's more of a hard rock album as opposed to the thrash or heavy metal albums before. I'm a pretty big Metallica fan but I've always liked the earlier stuff much more too.

Agreed. IMO, Justice was their best album with Puppets a very close second and anything after Black was "alright" at absolute best.

They were a thrash band that turned into a ballad band. It's as simple as that.

Load sucked because it wasn't Metallica. Metallica is, unanimously, regarded as one of the founders of American thrash metal, not American power ballads.

About sums it up. LOL

They swore they wouldn't make videos to gain popularity... Then the One video came out, and now you have James standing around in sandals with Armani bags.
