Anyone driven rt 66?

Me and a buddy are planning a road trip down rt 66. Plan is to start at rt 66 museum in Pontiac, il and end in Santa Monica. Has anyone been? Any tips?

I did the road trip a couple years ago and it was a pretty drive. I stayed to the highways mostly and didn't go all the way through Cali. I headed north about half way into the state. There are times where it gives you the option to get off the highway and take the original road, but I stayed on the highway. I would say you guys just need to decided what kind of driving you want to do and how much as far as which routes you want to take.

I've seen a documentary on this recently and got interested. Quite the trip to take. Plenty of food places to stop at apparently.

I drove my 68 f250 with a bunch of 79 f350 parts in the bed from Southern California all the way up 66 to Chicago, while flat towing my 84 Cressida wagon with the driveshaft unbolted.
I would sleep in the Cressida with the engine idling to stay warm and I stopped at maybe 50 or 60 junkyards and open an iron museums on my drive.

Was a blast. Best food was at all the seediest looking joints....junkyard guys knew the good joints to stop at.

it took me nearly two full weeks to get up here and I had to stop at every gas station every 100 or so mile intervals with a truck that got 8 miles per gallon with a tail wind.

I solo'd it in 1985 with a 1969 Mach 1 I bought 2 days earlier in California. Found out along the way some of the reasons they sold the car....

I'm sure it's a WEEE bit different out there nowadays but I'd love to do it again.

Been wanting to do this for 20 years, I would just add taking route 1 up through Washington for the last leg.

Where you going to in Albuquerque? I have been out there several times as a good friend lives out there. Actually, just got back from there a week and a half ago. There is a musical road section out there I would recommend. Kind of neat. Also, the paved roads up to the top of the Sandia mountains are awesome.

My boss and his wife just tired to do this and they said it sucked. He said there was a lot of detours on the off the highway, just not very enjoyable, and they abandoned the idea of 66 to stay in Branson MO instead.

There are some good roads out by the musical road and Tijeras, but unfortunately there are always cops sitting out there. The road that goes up to the top is 536 aka Sandia Crest Scenic Highway. Nice twisty and good pavement. Plus, the view at the top is tits.

one thing i noticed while on my short IL leg of it... not as many signs pointing out "old" route 66,

i had to make notes in the hotel in Springfield while following the map online.
this way I could stay on rt 66 and avoid missing any of it on the highway.
