I'm no captain PANDA but larger vessels have the right of way, correct? Guessing there is only so much room for it and these boats were in it's way? :dunno:

Generally its less maneuverable boats have right of way. Not really sure whats happening here but if people boats are anchored or moored you are supposed to stay away.

Coast Guard investigating whether Red Bull violated event permit | Local & Regional | KATU.com - Portland News, Sports, Traffic Weather and Breaking News - Portland, Oregon

PORTLAND, Ore. – The airships flying off Red Bull's "Flugtag" ramp Saturday weren't necessarily the show-stopper. What stopped the show was the sheer number of people who turned out for the competition.

Now, according to the U.S. Coast Guard, there is an official investigation into whether Red Bull violated its event permit. The event permit, obtained by KATU News, states, "You are reminded that your organization is primarily responsible for safety in the regatta area and that this permit does not relieve you of such responsibility."

The U.S. Coast Guard pulled Red Bull's event permit due to overcrowding two-hours before the event was intended to end.

“The Red Bull event staff was unable to control event spectators and as a result could not prevent hazardous conditions as required by the event permit,” the Coast Guard said in a news release.

The Coast Guard said there were more than 500 recreational boats on the Willamette during the event, far more than the 100 Red Bull said was expected on the water, according to the Coast Guard.

The investigation follows a separate investigation into whether the Portland Spirit hit a handful of boats while attempting to pass through an already crowded waterway, Saturday.

Nearly 90,000 people attended the event along Tom McCall Waterfront Park, as dozens of teams with homemade flying machines competed on a 28-foot-high ramp built by Red Bull.

Red Bull released a brief statement following the event's early end, but has said it will not be commenting further.

Well, an LEO used lights, siren, audible instructions over a PA, and hand signals told them to move, and they took their sweet-ass time to comply. Granted, the Spirit of Portland didn't give them sufficient time to move, but they certainly didn't seem to be in any hurry to get out of its way, either.

Basically, boaters are jackasses, and I don't feel bad their boats got dinged up, but SoP is ultimately at fault, IMO.

"He could have gone around"

LOOOOOOOL - some people really are 100% retarded. I bet that ship sits 15 feet deep in the water, the odds that there's multiple places it can use as a swim lane is a joke. Those boats anchoring in the middle of an active waterway are idiots. Probably shouldn't have been rammed but I look at it like a freight train. Get the fuck out of the way because they don't just stop and sit in the water.
