all I want to be able to do is have something that i can look at from my phone and see a few parts of around my house....

ideas/thoughts... i know several of you guys install stuff like this... and go.

What's your spending range? Do you have a spare PC you can keep running? How many cams?

There's a few options you can go with

I'll just make a huge post when I'm off work giving you all the options because I have a ton of different options going through my head and a smartphone keyboard isn't cutting it.

An older PC is fine. It would only be used for saving recordings and run the services for remote access from your phone.

Would definitely be interested in the details too... Thanks for putting something together!

I just bought a 4 camera kit off of eBay last year. Generic chinese garbage but it came with 4 cameras, the DVR box with a 160GB drive and if you hook it into your network you can use one of the many DVR monitoring apps to log in from anywhere. $150

is it possible to do what i want for what im looking to spend and have it be efficient/easy to operate?

Yes. 2 cams for sure. 3 will put you at the top of the budget. 4 will be over. But that's with HD PoE cameras, so the quality will at least be porn worthy and not like TV 20 years ago. The last time I did a quote for HD residential cameras was about a year ago and they were around $100/camera (HD PoE with night vision, less for no IR night vision) so prices may have dropped on the cameras.

Software is free for up to 8 cameras with 5 days of 24/7 recording (what the spare PC will run). Check out Milestone Xprotect Go. Thats what I would recommend and use (its what I have at home). It not only has mobile access but it also has video push...so you can record video from your phone and it will save to the home recorder.
