Well, we decided we are "one and done" with kids. So we traded in her '11 Sportage and got a 2014 Beetle Convertible 1.8TSI. Still got my Hawk for fun, and my Sportwagen for family/dogs/utility.

I'm undecided on the front plate. I've gotten pulled over three times for not having one, so I'm understandably cautious about not having it on. The OEM placement is having it drilled into the front bumper with an unsightly bracket. Having the plate trimmed and offset in the lower grill (to not block airflow) is the best compromise I can come up with for the time being.

Wife loves the color, and it's just girly enough to keep me from being tempted to go cruising in it.

Impressed you found one without the front bumper drilled. Seems common practice for dealers to drill them during PDI. I got a Beetle Turbo as a rental during snowmageddon and actually liked everything about it except the lack of any steering feel whatsoever. Is hers that way too?

Nice purchase for the wife! There might be a company that makes a removable front plate mount for that car so you don't have to drill the bumper cover and the plate won't look silly. The one I have works flawless.

I used to never have my front plate on, but some of the small town cops around here are kind of dicks about small stuff and I don't want to pay a useless ticket. The removable bracket is perfect for not messing up the front bumper and it can be removed to ease cleaning of the front bumper.

I got a chance to drive it with the wife and my daughter in the car to the Kane County Cougars game today. It's fun to drive with just a hint of sport to it. Basically, it's a mildly sporty, yet comfortable, daily driver for someone who doesn't place an emphasis on racing around. Any turbo lag is very minimal, and it pulls well up to redline for passing maneuvers. A stage 1 APR tune on this engine picks up about 60 hp and 90 ft-lbs, but they don't have it for the automatic 6 speed (non-DSG) at this point, apparently. APR 1.8 TSI Generation 3 ECU Upgrade

If this engine were in my car, a tune would be essential. Not needed for my wife, however. :)
