The last couple weeks we've been toying around with the idea to build an F body. Mike R.'s been talking about building a street/strip car we can then convert into doubling as a mile car once it's done what we've set out to do. We searched high & low for rollers, but very few were meeting our requirements and expectations. This last week we narrowed the search down to three cars, a Camaro in NY, one in TX, and the other in North Carolina. Discussing the positives and negatives about each car helped us narrow the search down to one 2000 Camaro SS in Texas.
The car had been pretty well setup already with good parts and best of all a Ford 9" rear diff. I think it was about Wed/Thursday of last week when we decided to hell with it we leave Friday morning. So we unburied the trailer, hooked it up to the truck, and off we went. The car was located in Odessa, TX which is about 50 miles from New Mexico and half way down the state of TX. So for lack of a better term this drive was gonna suck. It was nice to get out of the snow, but only driving to pick up the car and turn around to come home was a big tease with the nice weather.
Here is some pics of the car when we went to pick it up.
Here's a couple trailer shots after loading it.
After getting back to the shop we immediately cleaned the undercarriage of the car which was simply wiping the dust/dirt & some left over grease off the bottom of the car, but man is it nice without rust. We decided while cleaning the under car that the 4.11 gear won't be the ideal ratio for the car so we went ahead and pulled the third member to change the gear tomorrow.
Engine compartment got a cleaning before we get ahead of ourselves and put the engine/trans in which should be done within a week I'd say.
Most of the interior was torn apart for the cage work and had been stored inside the car. Texas dust/dirt gets everywhere, and it's that red dirt/clay that we thought was mainly out west. Removed the interior to be cleaned tomorrow:
Once back in a rolling state the car will need some modifications to the roll cage to make it safer and to pass tech around here. Definitely a good start to a safe cage though.
Stay tuned for more pics to come after it's back in roller status and we can get started full force with drive-train, fuel system, and turbo/inter-cooler setup.
