EDIT: BUMPED OLD THREAD. NEW PICS FURTHER DOWN IN THREAD

I returned the Legacy wagon after discovering that it had a few problems that I didn't want to deal with. I ended up going with a 2010 Jetta Sportwagen 2.5 with a manual trans and pano roof. I thought about the TDI, but the cost savings from fuel economy didn't outweigh the increased purchase price for my situation. Although it doesn't have the oomph that my GTI had, I do enjoy the feel and look of the car, and using regular gas instead of premium is a plus.

I blacked out the grill, badges, and sidemarkers, and added a set of 18" RS4 replica wheels to it. I need to get the windows tinted next, so I sent Kevin a PM...

Congrats on the purchase. I'm a fan.

I don't understand your logic on the TDI wouldn't pay for itself? How long do you plan on keeping the car? How many miles a year do you drive? The TDI offers an average of just under 10 mpg better. To add to that they often exceed their MPG rating whereas a gas motor rarely ever achieves it.

For example my wife and I just bought a Beetle TDI and on our trip back from Yorkville today, which covered 51 miles of mostly highway at 5pm we averaged 48 mpg. The 13 Beetle Auto TDI is rated for 29/32/39... Lifetime average MPG on the car is currently at 35 mpg and that is mostly city.

Since you bought used I cannot comment on the price spread, but for the Beetle it was about 2500 at the MSRP level (that usually shrinks once you get the out the door price). I can pay that off in 6 years by the EPA standards, and much faster in real world numbers that myself and most others are seeing.

Good luck with your VW.

About $5700 more for a Jetta TDI Sportwagen through my dealer for one with a pano roof for the same year and miles. I plan on keeping the car 5 years or less. So I'd need to save $1140 per year to break even over the course of 5 years.

I drive about 15,000 miles per year, so if I avg 25 mpg with the 2.5, that will be 600 gallons per year of fuel. With a TDI that averages 40 mpg (an optimistic 15 mpg better), that would be 375 gallons per year. 600 gallons minus 375 gallons = a difference of 225 gallons times $4 per gallon = $900 per year in gas savings with the TDI vs the 2.5. Thus, I'd need to keep the car for 6.33 years for the fuel savings to make up for the increased purchase price of $5700.

Of course, this doesn't account that the actual gas mileage for either might be a little higher or lower, or the difference in price between 87 octane and diesel, or the resale value of the TDI later on down the road, or the maintenance differences between the two.

If I drove more or planned to keep the car longer, then yes, the fuel savings of the TDI would certainly turn the equation in favor of the diesel. :)
