Default Lets talk long range!

Who here, is actually into long range shooting, and understands, or wants to under stand how you do it?

And I mean by long range, I'm not talking about lets take a guess it's a 100 yards and squeeze one off in hopes of hitting it.

I'm talking about knowing or wanting to know what all those little hash marks in your scope mean.

Knowing and learning what Mil and MOA mean.

Example, using you SCR MIL scope, finding a target and knowing how far your target is.

Lets use your average human. Your average human is about 5"8" that converts to 68". Now using your SCR Mil scope, you zoom in on someone, and that person is now 4Mils tall.

You take that 68" x 27.77 = 1,888.36 divide that by your Mil of 4 and you get 472.09 yards away. Now you dope up in order to hit said target.

The smaller the Mil, the farther your target is, the larger your Mil, the closer your target is.

its fun.. I shoot in a ton of Multi Gun events and have just gotten into PRS events.. I'm more of a "dialer" but the distance of targets is known before we shoot so you can develop your dope card so you know your shooting solutions that need to be dialed in before you shoot.

quite satisfying being able to hit shots with first trigger pull. i've gone out to 600 so far on a tiny 9" diamond shaped steel

i've shot my .308 at 3-400 yards prior.

i think one of my favorite parts was after the squeeze and then the bang, waiting for the WHAPPPP on the target down range

click bang

i'd love to learn more about long range shooting, and go shooting past 100 yards. Been to the range in WI that has the 300 yard range, but never was on it (nor really have anything worth bringing.

I started learning the ACOG markings and what not simply from playing PUBG - using the kar98k to pop off a head at 500m+ is satisfying to say the least. . That's actually what got me more interested in how hard it actually is to shoot long distance like that. It's amazes me at what people can do.

only way to do it is to get out there and shoot...plenty of ballistic apps that will tell you how much to dial in on your scope. all you need to know is the weight of your projectile and muzzle velocity. it's all math

We learned all that stuff but I only was ever cool enough to have iron sights IRL, and never had a scope in service or out. Closest I ever came was in a video game... I played some ArmAIII for a while where we fooled around with that stuff and hit up some long range targets, etc... Can't remember the instructor's name but he was a guy who did this for a living for a while (it was with Spearhead Gaming).

I've always wanted to get into that stuff but I'm not really sure where I'd go to practice.

Anyway, your post made me think of one of my favorite comics...

Aurora Sportsman Club has 600 yards, I've never shot at that range though. Best I can say I've done is hit a bowling pin at 200 with a Mosin. Certaiinly wasn't the first shot either.

If anyone wants to talk fundamentals, recommend books etc on how to not suck I'm there though.

I was the last cycle to qual with irons in 2007 I believe. Then they got fucking ACOGs. I got an ACOG in MCT though, that was neat. Then we had ACOGs from then out in the fleet.

Like raging, I was plinking "B" targets at 500 yds with 5.56 with iron sights BACK IN MY FUCKIN DAY. Wasn't the prettiest thing ever but hey, I've done it. I'd love to go up a couple calibers and do 500+ just to do it.

I’d love to get my AR out to a range and test out the ACSS reticle ranging features.

Yeah my last qual before EAS was right before the transition. They were doing the dry run of the combat pew pew shit too, but our scores didn't count on that part. I didn't get an ACOG in MCT, all I got was some ticks and swampass.

ACOGs, self-ironing cammies, boots that don't need polishing... Kids today, man....

Table 2 was neat. Felt like an operator for an hour. Then went back to our offices and twiddled our thumbs like good government property.

most are all private ranges:
aurora sportsman club - 600yrds
Tri-County Gun club - 200yrds
Beloit rifle club - 500meters
Winnequah gun club (lodi, WI) - 1200yrds

McMiller Sports Park is open to the public and has 300 yard shooting and is fairly inexpensive to shoot there.. Its like an hour north of the border in WI

I'm a member at Beloit and Tri-County and shoot at Aurora several times a year for multi-gun matches and they are all good people and great places to shoot at. may be worth your time to head up to McMiller and shoot a little there at some distance and go from there.

Feel free to ask me anymore ?'s

Depends on how much you shoot. If you're going shooting a two or three times a month, it's not bad compared to an hour at the indoor range. If you only shoot once every other month or two, then yeah it's definitely expensive.
