Default CCW Class Question - Newb

Hey guys,

So, tomorrow the wife and I are going to a CCW class with Condition Yellow Academy.

We are both excited AND nervous.

I wanted to get some info from those that have gone through a similar class.

I am aware of the topics and things they cover as well as the range qualification (we actually live tested a B27 target @ HP Shooting and both passed with flying colors, "unofficially") but, wanted more info to address different concerns.

So, during the class, do you actually stand up in front of everyone and practice drawing from a holster?

The part they cover about concealed firing and dry firing from a concealed position in the class, do you actually hide behind something and fire? Is it one person at a time?

During the range qualification, do you all shoot at once, or, is it one by one by one?

Trying to not get worked up about it as I've heard of a couple of people reviewing xyz CCW class and saying it was tough, they made you do things in the class like you would in college or something, in front of an audience, etc.

Thanks folks!

-Chris

Don't fret! The only people that matter in that class are you and the wife, no one else is there except you two. I don't remember if we did any holster work in the class, I think we may have? But we did do some reloading and other drills in front of the class, but again, you guys are the only two in the class!

Range qualification for us was all of us shooting AT YOUR OWN PACE. That is the key, the way we did it was everyone lined up and were told "begin first round" and it didn't matter if it took you 10 seconds or 5 minutes to finish, we waited until everyone was done, and then did round two and so on. Once again, you and your wife are the only two that matter!

Don't be afraid to ask questions, and take notes!

Good deal man.

I assume everyone does the drills in front of the class, etc, right? Are they just drills, or, is this something that you're graded on aside from the range qualification?

Where did you do your CCW class, by the way?

Not so much worried about other people, we were at first and were prepared to do a private class, but, at $500 each person, we decided against it, lol.

Everyone does the drills (at least we all did) and you are NOT graded on them, the only thing that's required is the classroom time and the shooting qualification.

I did the CCW Class through @Eagle's guy Dan Lanan and he was fantastic! @tinfoilhat did his class with me, along with @Yaj Yak and @SRT41320

We did a couple holster draws everybody did them together, I'd recommend taking a holster class if you haven't, most people that that have an accidental discharge do it while putting the gun back in the holster

Yeah we did some holster/reload drills in class with zero ammo which is not graded and more just advice and obvious stuff.

The only thing that matters for CCW is you spent the hours in class and you pass the shooting test (stupid easy unless you are Michael J Fox)

The whole class did the shooting test at once. Basically load mags with 10 rounds, everyone steps back. Instructor tells everyone step forward, load weapon and shoot at your own pace. Step back when done. Then instructor comes around and checks.

Don't be nervous, you are making it a much bigger deal then it really is and if you are an ok shot , you'll do just fine.

We did a bunch of drills/scenarios in my CCW class. Where they had a projector and gun with laser. Each person ran through about 5 different situations with regards should you draw and shoot or not. I was laughed at pretty hard when I chose not to shoot when my (in video) wife was being attacked.

Good stuff guys!
@tinfoilhat - I do believe I am a good shot. When we unofficially qualified on the B27 targets, I was 100%, at 5, 7 and 10 yards. I was inside the 8 circle on all shots, wife was just as good too.

I think with these Condition Yellow, it is the laser gun target thing too.

Appreciate all of your opinions.

Maybe we should do a TCG gun club meet thing, once a month or every other month. I'll buy the first round of drinks and bring plenty of 9MM or .45 ACP ammo.

I'll let you know how it goes guys.

Only recommendation is bring the firearm you're most comfortable with. Ask any questions and have fun. Also when you qualify pay attention to who has no clue what they're doing or a noob and let them shoot first and get out of the lanes so it's safer for everyone especially you and the wife.

Depending on the range you decide on interested in shooting and a round afterwards. Even if we split this into north/south or something.

That said, we did a few holster draws but it was certainly not something you were graded on. There wasn't a test per se, but they did say if you did something stupid like bring live ammo to class they would kick you out and ban you from getting your license with them. Basically it boils down to common sense.

The B27 is easy, as said do it at your own pace, and bring a gun that's comfortable to shoot not one that's comfortable to carry. I could qualify with my air weight j-frame now, but I certainly wouldn't have done it back then. I had some of the tightest groups via my k-frame next to a guy with a 92FS which should tell you something. That said I took my time and was loading a revolver w/o speed loaders with SWCs which is a bitch.

ED:

The best advice I can give you is don't be nervous about it. The people that seemed nervous did the worse shooting wise. I guess that makes sense, but chill out and make good shots.

my wife's instructor made her class shoot with their opposite hand. I never heard of that before and did not have to do that for my ccw.

So far so good guys. Already qualified and the class has been fun. Only 5 people and a cool instructor. I got 30/30 in all of the 9 circle. The wife did 29/30 and had two just outside the 9 ring.

Time for lunch.

My ccw was a certified instructor from USCCA and he did a free class in Crystal Lake at the Holiday Inn. We went over everything that's required by law and then some. People asked questions and everything was answered. He threw out general situations and asked who would do what.

(Example: you come up on a guy half way in a car struggling with a female driver over a gun. Who would shoot the male, the female, or do something else like call 911- Practically everybody said they'd shoot the guy. I said who knew what the situation was before hand and maybe it's the guy who is the victim....I was right).

We used the laser guns as well against a projector from a draw and to practice holding the weapon properly. For the range, we went to On Target and everybody shot one by one with no time limit. The instructor paid for everything including the range. The only thing he didn't provide was our pistols and ammo (although he did let one person use his pistol).

I was extremely nervous to a point only because I get "test anxiety." But it was extremely easy and nothing to worry about. I got 30/30 and with a pistol I wasn't entirely to familiar with (I let my father in law use my weapon and I borrowed my brother's for the class).

Every instructor will teach differently. But it's NOTHING to worry about. You and your wife will be fine.

Excellent! It's always good to hear that we have another CCW'er in the state. Glad you decided to do it despite the high cost and ridiculous length of the training.

Now let's hope getting your permit goes smoothly too and you don't end up waiting over 2 years like some people.

Thanks man!

I heard it is a long wait, and the costs are high. Right now, we're probably $600 invested and will be around $900 for just the classes, electronic fingerprints, CCW permits and range fees.

I've heard the waits are crazy and IL has denied people for very poor reasons. Seems it is all about the money as they don't refund you the $150 if they deny you.

We will see what happens. Still need to pick out a gun (going to test fire several more before making up my mind) and wait until I get the permit before buying.

Well, you're not in Crook County where most of the problems with denials and delays are occurring, so hopefully you'll be fine.

In Cook County, they use any excuse to deny you a permit, especially if you've ever had any contact with law enforcement in your life.

Unfortunately, we do live in Crook county.

I've had very few run-ins with Police and have a clean record.

Same for my wife.

Only thing I can see being an issue with her is she came to the country when she was 7. That should be interesting, even though she's been a citizen for 20+ years.

I live in Kane County (Hampshire) and without prints, it took me exactly 90 days to receive my permit.

Cook County is another story solely because it's Cook County. But I also believe it has to do with the city you live in as well.

Just out of curiosity, what reasons were they giving?

I've always thought about going through CCW, just waiting for all the BS to die down as it's not really a high priority.

You are right.

I received a letter from the Sheriff's office stating they were denying me a permit, but that it was overthrown by the State's attorney office or some shit like that. I have it saved somewhere. lol. I do have a history of law enforcement "interaction" if you will and a handful of arrests, but no felonies or even convictions. I always got away with supervision or fines and community service, etc..

So they can only try to drag the shit out but it will bite them eventually.

And fuck Crook county. My wife and I both legally carry.
