Default Air Force Cadet Creates New Bullet Resistant Material

Hayley Weir, an Air Force cadet, had an idea while in her chemistry class. Her idea involves combining sheer thickening fluid with bullet resistant materials to create a compound that hardens instantly at the point of impact but otherwise remains flexible. The resulting product weighs 1/3 of what bullet proof gear weighs now. Currently, the material can stop 9mm and .44 magnum bullets. Pretty cool.

An Air Force cadet named Hailey created a new body armor? And her last name is Wier?

Holy un-intended Stargate references.

But also cool. I wonder what the secret ingredients are. Non-newtonian fluids aren't anything new, can make your own out of Corn Starch + Water.

But usually when they are shot at, they tended to explode in a spectacular fashion.

I thought they were testing this idea back when I was in (08). Probably a different chemical compound but still, the idea has been around a while at least, they even say so in the article. But you're not competing with SAPI or whatever it is now if you're on 9mm detail, a regular flak with no inserts isn't really all that heavy or cumbersome. Not sure about the .44 mag though, what sort of upgrade would be needed to a standard flak to stop that...? When they say it weighs one-third what current bulletproof gear weighs, are they using the 26lb figure of flak+SAPI or whatever it is now...? Because I didn't read anywhere in the article about stopping 7.62 which is kinda important.
