Mossberg 500 or Remington 870, unless you have VEPR $.

If you can get to a semi auto budget wise, it's worth it.

If not, get to a store and fondle them. See which fits you best and which you like best ascetically. Because between either of these options, you're getting a great piece.

Pump action sounds fun, but if you really want something to defend yourself, you'll want semi auto.

Plenty of great reviews on YT for what you're interested in.

came in to say Remington 870 or mossberg 500. @Eagle got it covered though. Both guns have been around forever, are dead nuts reliable and can had for cheap.

I'm more of a Remington guy myself, and own the 870 magpul tactical version. Was my first shotgun.

Semi autos are great, but you need to train and be diligent with your safety. Ain't nobody got time for accidental double taps when clearing your own home.

Pumps have their place, for sure.

My savage 320 was 200 bucks with 100 rounds of ammo on black Friday. Dirt cheap and have shot 50 rounds through it with no problems and haven't cleaned it yet.

590a1 mossberg.
It is the US military issue pump shotgun and has many upgrades over an 870 or 500

X3 on owning a Remmington 870 here as well. I have just a 'regular' express

@SleeperLS, Don't 'limit' yourself to the tactical, the standard gun is REALLY modular, so you can buy a shorter barrel, and tactical grips later on if you want to be budget minded.

I bought mine with trap shooting, and home defense in mind (granted the standard barrel is a million miles long)

Side-Note, the 870 is first firearm I've ever OWNED (Fired plenty prior), and it is just dirt simple to use/aim/handle. My very first time EVER out trap shooting I had an exceptionally high hit rate with it, which was super confidence inspiring.

I know that; but I expected since it was my first time EVER pulling the trigger on this gun, first time handling a shotgun in a decade, and my first time trap shooting, that I'd be a hot mess.

It sounds weird to say, but it feels very 'natural', but I suppose this should be no surprise to people that going shooting with regularity as they'd want it to be that way.

I've used Iron Sights, and scopes on the 'plinking' rifles I've used much more recently, and the sight on the 870 was just SUPER easy, I thought it would be awkward for some reason.
