Default Picking an Optic

Since my AR is now complete, it is time for an Optic. I see no reason to throw $600+ at an EoTech, what do you guys run on your setups?

And, since I like the way it came out, My AR

I bought a sightmark red dot that was on sale from 250 for like $60 and turned out to be junk. Last time I cheap out. I think I'm gonna try a primary arms micro dot. Not cheaper but not expensive. If it fails I'm gonna have to say fuck it and buy an aimpoint.

Eotech 512 or aimpoint PRO (here's a great price on the aimpoint Aimpoint PRO Patrol Rifle Optic Red Dot Sight)

I will put Back-up Irons on it, but I want something like a Red Dot or a Reflex sight.

I have heard good things about the Aimpoint sights, but that cost is more than 1/2 the cost of the rifle, so I'm not really interested in spending $400 on an optic. Especially since this is my first go-around and I may not even like using a red dot (not likely, but possible).

Thinking about giving this guy a shot:

I've got a Burris 332 on mine, not the cheapest, but a really nice optic. I think it was $339 new plus tax.

I was actually thinking of picking up one of the smaller sights to mount on top of the main Burris optic so I don't have to keep looking down a magnified sight shooting closer objects. Anyone have any experience with these on ARs?

I love my Eotech, but I liked the reticle more than just the simple dot of am Aimpoint. You'll be happy with either one, just don't buy a cheap red dot.

consider optic with "paintball sight" in the description

Dear god, stay away from anything sight mark related.

Pick up an Aimpoint PRO if you're looking for a top notch optic. The battery e, durability, and reliability blows away the competition. The only other optics that perform better in any of those categories are other Aimpoints.

primaryarms makes good sights. I'm running their 1-6x on two of my setups. Great optics for the price and they are very popular.

Putting that paintball optic on your rifle is like putting a set of pacesetters on a corvette.

Aimpoint. If you don't want to drop the coin get a Primary Arms micro red dot. Really nice for the money.

I get that eotech and aimpoint are great and accurate, but with either option, I'm looking at spending almost as much on the optic as I did building the gun. I guess I should have specified that this is mainly a range toy, no hunting trips or battle zones that are going to be rugged on it.

I like that primary arms one, I may pick up one of those....

Vortex Strikefire II is a great red dot sight, especially for the value. I was in the same boat as you; I highly recommend it and have no regrets.

I was looking at the Burris 1-4x24 Fullfield TAC30 Combo CQ 5.56.
Scope for long distance and a red dot for close up. Best of both worlds.

I have an EOTech right now and it's junk. It's a great holographic sight, when it works, but unfortunately it goes through batteries like crazy even when it's off. If you let it sit for more than a few weeks without taking the batteries out, it kills them. You go to turn the thing on and nothing. Dead batts. It's not something you can rely on.

If you're really set on a high quality red dot, go for the Aimpoint. I hear the batteries last forever in those.

I've had my eotech 512 for several years now and only switched the batteries once. Either way I think I'm going to put it on my saiga 12 and put an aimpoint on my AK.

And to the OP, it's really not about how much it costs. A cheap optic is like a cheap musical instrument. It will constantly be going out of zero (kinda like a cheap guitar that never stays in tune) and you will just end up being frustrated and wish you just sprung for a good one in the first place. It will also most likely break easily and eat expensive odd-sized batteries quickly. If you truly want something cheap and nice you really can't beat a nice set of irons. And yes, that means putting down some cash to get the nice irons, not the cheapest ones you can find. Another thing to consider about a nice optic is if you ever want to sell the optic they hold their value incredibly well. Not the case with a paintball sight

I have about 6 or 7 aimpoint micros and love them. I keep them on all the time and replace the batteries every year or two. I also have an Eotech xps2 , and like that as well.

One question: what are you planning on doing with this rifle?
