Default Serp tensioner pulley question

I am trying to get creative in routing belts on my accessory brackets because I want the space for some piping later. I have a pulley with edges but no grooves in it. I was wondering if I could put the inside of the belt on this without doing anything, or if I need to dig a grooved pulley up.
