Here is a great resource if trying to do a swap on the cheap. It's geared toward turbo setups because, well, all other setups that are not turbo are ghey. Else look on LS1tech under the conversion section for other good writeups.

5.3 truck block. What are the best budget heads to toss on. I already have a cam, will update specs on it later. Going to delete the DOD, LS7 lifters, most likely ARP the rods. But thats about it for the block itself, it's a 0 mile motor.

What's the best harness to use along with PCM?

I plan on running this setup through a 700r4, I was told I needed just a different flex plate to make that work out. Ideally 6 speed, but that won't be in the funds

243 I would think. 5.3's don't have a 4" bore to run the bigger valve heads.

3.78 bore on the 5.3 vs 3.90 bore on ls1. I thought it wouldn't work. Not to mention effects on quench.

I know what you mean now, and yes that can be done. I seem to remember people making a big deal about running 6.2 heads on a 6.0, which I've done. It came down to valve sizes in the bigger heads and clearance between piston outer lip.

What about harmonic balancer? This is a truck block and has a double rigged balancer for dual belts

You could always switch things over to an fbody balancer and accessory bracket. Keep in mind you will also have to do a fbody waterpump if you use an ls1 intake.

87 IROC. Daily driver, 425+HP NA

6 speed eventually

Turbo after that. But I'm looking at running 2-3 seasons before going this route as I understand I may want to change pistons to run a good setup

That cam is way too big imo. 243 and stock head gaskets should put you at boost friendly 9.1 cr

I would run a f body pan. The cam is a little big but guys run MS3 cams on 5.3s all the time with good results. 243s on your motor with probably get you around 10-10.5-1. You have a aluminium 5.3 which come with flat top pistons.

Also, i would try really hard to bite the bullet and get a 4l60e. I run the PSI Conversions harness. It fit really well and was good quality for $500. Im also running a 99+ f body PCM. I also ran the truck accessories and they fit like a glove in my mustang.

For a 3rd gen, no clue. They make a pan called the hot rod pan, no clue if it would work better though.
