I dunno. It's weird because I mean, I still really feel the rain events have been the main cause, sure the dam may need work, but water is and has always been designed to go right over it.

1993? or around there flood was the first time I remember it coming into my dad's yard, and then the 2013 event as well as 2017

The thing with this is, i dont think the "flood gates" even existed then.... and it did it...

Something no one still talks about is in 2013, they were working on the bridge north of the dam and they built land bridges into the water 1/3 the way from each side, so 2/3 the river was basically blocked to a certain extent... im not a hydrologist engineer bro, but that has to be significant in my silly opinion.

Then we go to the event last year, 2017, burlington gauge hit a level THREE FEEEEEEET above the previous record heigh. 3. fucking. feet. the chain gets excited about inches above records, they went three goddamn feet!

Quote:
Rain totals as of 4 p.m. Wednesday:

Bohners Lake: 8.04 inches
Burlington: 6.80 inches
Dousman: 4.1 inches
Elkhorn: 7.2 inches
Franklin: 1.99 inches
Greenfield: 3.7 inches
Lyons: 8.09 inches
Menomonee Falls: 2.48 inches
New Berlin: 2.98 inches
Pewaukee: 4.6 inches
Wheatland: 8.0 inches
all over night! and most of those locations are fox chain watershed. like... this was an EXTREME situation.

I had a new hypothesis for why we have a dredge issue/overflowing situation for like all three of you to read.

It came to me while looking at old map aerial views... mainly of McHenry, and one thing significant stood out.

In McHenry, used to be Dobyns house, dobyns had a set of tour boats- the flossie bell and anna marie i think i read somewhere today.

In that pic, you can see them docked in the channel to buddyz... these boats were SIXTY FEET LONG. that's really good sized for one, and two, they are seen there, parked tied up to the shore, like it's deep there or something.

Nowadays im nervous to just drive my boat down that channel.

But where my mind went with this, is how the hell was the channel deep enough to get back there in the early to mid 90s and not now- what changed- it's not like there was a significant dredging program before the early to mid 90s to keep the chain silt at bay... nope.

but. they did begin a more substantial drawdown around that time- the process of lowering the chain a significant amount.

Drawdown Of Lakes Turns Into Showdown - tribunedigital-chicagotribune

Time For The Drawdown - tribunedigital-chicagotribune

Could this be impeding flow so much that silt and dirt carried into the chain, instead of flowing through as it used to, are now just depositing because the winter/spring flow is no longer there?

I mean looking at these maps- there are good sized boats a LOT of places i wouldn't dare trying to go nowadays. i dont think it's because the fwa isn't trying to dredge, but i think they have so much and too much to dredge to where they won't ever catch up or get ahead.

I agree something is different verses years ago. If the Chain has more silt in it that means less storage right. Less storage? More flooding? I don't know if you remember my back yard. My neighbor to the north has a pier probably 25ft off shore. She does not have a boat so she does not give a fuck. Obviously cannot pull a boat to that dock currently you be lucky to have 6 inches of water depth at the end. She said the last time someone brought a boat to her house was "early 90's " I believe. So I could guess the water depth was 2-4ft back then at the end of her dock? In 2015 her dock had dry land under it from the drought. So in ~25 years she lost that much depth due to silt. My dock is MUCH longer but when my house is paid off is my bay going to be a mucky mess? It would be unboatable if we loose that kinda depth. The river would be only a few feet deep at that point and most likely would only be able to be used by outboards. fuck shit IDK

i mean who knows you know, this could all be BS if those things only drafted like 2 feet or less which could be possible as well

i know the water in front of my dad's house hasn't changed in depth at all...

Probably. Normal almost flooded summer pool north of McHenry.

Id say the lower was pretty normal for July/August and was actually happy it wasn't worse knowing we were not really getting rain. But it dropped a lot this weekend with the temperatures and continued lack of rain. Hopefully some of this water gets down to me.

LOL

Go down to Keifs Reef. You be lucky if the top of your windshield was the same level as the dock.
