Worked on the cobra today, AND GOT THE ENGINE IN.
My plan of attack was install from the top, engine/trans/long tube headers all in one. Well It worked! I started off the day with the pilot bearing giving me a ton of trouble. Ended up braking 2 removal tools for the pilot bearing but finally got it off after getting a slid hammer, that took about an hour. I also ran into a problem when I tried installing the trans on to the engine, turned out that I didn’t line up the clutch disc just right. After all of that things went much smoother.
I had the car on jack stands and the engine lifting as high as it would go. The long tubes were really tight going in, but with some wiggling and moving it, when right into place. The diver's side tubes kept hitting the K member. I also remembered about the steering shaft going thur the long tubes so that was great. Only other problem was with the engine and trans together the engine was jammed right up against the firewall and I bent one of the heater core out let tubes, no biggie just bent it back.
Didn't mess up the firewall/valve cover/coil covers. So I was glad that didn't get that messed up. All in all took maybe 5 hours, with a lot of phone calls and beer drinking involved.
All in all, anyone trying to install a cobra engine ISN'T for the ill hearted, I pushed my luck with the engine/trans/LT's but did managed to get it done. I've done engines in 5.0's,sn95's, SOHC 4.6's, 1 dohc 98 cobra, nissan 240 sx, nissan 200 sx, chevy cavalier, Ford escort, LS1's, 88 trans am 350, and im sure more but this cobra TOPPED the list and boy am I glad it's in!
