Here is some information about the EGR valve. When fuel is burnt it produces harmful oxides of Nitrogen emissions (NOx). (who cares right) The hotter the fuel is burnt the more NOx it produces. So, the government had the car makers install the EGR system (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) to reduce the emissions. This means that the exhaust gas, which is an inert gas (no oxygen), is routed back into the cars intake. The inert gas occupies valuable space in the piston chamber backing out O2. Thus lowering the temperature and NOx emissions on the exhaust. If you haven’t figured it out yet, the EGR system also robs power! But it also lowers your exhaust temperatures.
