Default 5.0L TFS or 4.6L Turbo

Hello
I am looking to get back into a Mustang and found one local with the TFS top end kit incl stage II cam, roller rockers and double rolling timing chain plus, Pro M MAF and someone's TB and 30 lb injectors. The owner is hard to catch up with so I am not getting a lot of info besides he bought it not running with 42# injectors and replaced those and uses it as his daily driver now.

The other is a 96 with a PI swap engine and an ON# turbo pushing 5# of boost that needs to be tuned. I am leaning on the turbo because I feel it will sound great (under boost), and being a stock block I don't have to worry who did what to iit, worst case scenario replace the block. It has a upper plenum, MSD components, tubular K frame and A arms, coil overs, caster/camber plate, and Cobra brakes all around and 3.55 rear.

Who locally tunes SN95 mod motors with turbos?

Thanks

DynotuneMP Mike Post, Tim Barth Mr. Norms, or if you can wait Hans at Deans when Bob Kurgan is in town.

Hey thanks for the info. I have heard Mike does great work didn't know he worked on turbos though. I will call the others too to see what they say.

What is the general opinion of the ON3 kits. Some say garbage stay away others sell their SC with a smile.

And for the suggestion of the 03/04 Cobra I will gladly take a 0% loan that is forgivable from the person with that advice

Talk to Angus on here. I believe he used that turbo kit on his 2V 2004. IIRC, the kit had numerous fitment problems that needed to be corrected.

Good Luck,,, If your going to TCG track day this Sunday, Mike should be there if you want to talk about your choices. He has his own twin turbo stang, he's put that away for the winter now but he knows turbos.

Just talking from experience.

The kit is cheap and I had numerous issues with mine and dumped a lot more money into it to get it to work right... Also, the 2v internals are garbage for turboing/making power...

Wish I would have just gotten a cobra for the amount of money spent and headaches...

Wow! I had wishfull thinking on this but I just asked the previous owner why is he selling to see. I was hoping the issues have been worked out except the tune but again its wishful but I am trying to get it for about 3K so I am willing to take small risk. I love turbos so I am biased but I am listening to you guys because you all have been there and done that.

I'm just trying to crack the 12's for now I thought the mod motors were good for at least 400 hp. I also thought the turbo was better because on a SC the engine has to make more hp to just drive the compressor whereas the turbo relies on exhaust gas that doesn't rob the engine of horsepower.

1 member on here has a 2V with a 2.1 KB and broke into the 11's.

That is true about turbo's vs SC, although at 5psi you have nothing to worry about. On another note, cheap turbo kits may cost you more in the long run. A 3k investment may turn into a money pit fixing on a daily basis with something like this. Stick to the proven you'll save money down the road.

Nothing wrong with 2v cars done right they can go fruggin fast, everyone wants a 4v Cobra including me, 3v are forgotten bastards even Ford quit offering a built bottom (I was lucky to get one of the last Aluminators made). 2v cars are inexpensive as far as go fast parts easy to get, 3v harder to get blocks and expensive, 4v ultimate awesome but the most expensive way to go.

After thinking about the fitment issues and getting a chance to talk to the owner of the 5.0 I chose the 5.0. I love the sound of the cam but also know it won't be frugal on gas but plan on taking it to Mike when he has some time. to get it all dialed in.

Funny you mention the 4V motors but I had a chance to get 2 different cars with 4V motor but didn't know that they are highly sought after. I thought the parts were more expensive and the engines were more complex to work on so I passed on them both (and they sold). Well next time I will know better.

Thanks everyone for their advice/info. Mike isn't a fan of the ON3 kits so I nixed that idea and got a 95 GT with the TFS top end kit and stage II cam. I had Mike go over it (nice fella) and added a SCT chip and tuned it to 286hp/315tq. I will be using a power adder but haven't decided which way yet. I am on a tight budget (3 kids and a wife) so it will be either a used Vortech which are plentiful or a used Procharger (seen a few). I still would like to considered a higher quality turbo kit (used) but have to do some research to see which ones have less issues.

Good to hear I think you will enjoy that car and shouldn't be to hard on your budget. Mike is good people and spends time with customers on pro's and con's of a build.
It's good to get information from the forums but with 3 excellent Mustang shops in the area (Mr. Norms, Dynotune MP and Deans) I would always weight what they have to say as your best information. They can keep you from having to do things twice and save your wallet.

Congrats on your new beast hope to see ya out at the track sometime.
