removing pilot bearing?

OK so im having a problem, Im trying to remove the pilot bearing from my 2004 cobra engine (because im putting a TH400 behind it). I have a Pilot bearing puller from advanced autoparts, and when i tried to use it (yes i did use it properly as instructed by the manual and what i know about cars) but instead of pulling a bearing out, it just started gutting the pilot bearing and pulling out metal.....

any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Get an old input shaft.
Pack the bearing hole with grease or wet bread.
Slide the input shaft in there then beat with a hammer.

It will come out and no this is not a joke.
